Darker Waves has unveiled the lineup for its 2026 return to Huntington Beach, California. The single-day festival takes place Saturday, November 14, with Morrissey and The Smashing Pumpkins topping a bill that also includes Simple Minds, Bad Religion, Adam Ant, The Psychedelic Furs, Soft Cell, The Damned, Manic Street Preachers, Gary Numan, Silversun Pickups, and more.

Also on the lineup are Buzzcocks, EMF, Circle Jerks, Spacehog, Marky Ramone, Mariachi El Bronx, Cold Cave, TR/ST, Gene, Modern English, The Motels, The Sounds, Choir Boy, Missing Persons, Christian Death, Deceits, Past Self, Riki, Warfield, Purest Form, and Casket Cassette, among others from across the post-punk, new wave, goth, punk, and darkwave spectrum.

The festival’s official website is now promoting a presale beginning Thursday, April 2 at 10 a.m. PT, alongside links for general admission and premium ticket options. The site currently directs fans to sign up for a presale passcode and festival updates.

The 2026 edition marks the return of Darker Waves for the first time since its inaugural 2023 outing, which brought New Order, Tears for Fears, Echo & The Bunnymen, Devo, Soft Cell, The Psychedelic Furs, OMD, The Human League, and Violent Femmes to the beach in Huntington Beach. That first festival paired legacy new wave and post-punk names with newer acts working in related styles, and the 2026 bill appears to follow the same general blueprint.

Poznań, Poland, is preparing for three nights of darkwave, deathrock, post-punk, and the sort of dawn that finds your eyeliner still intact but your soul slightly rearranged.

This summer brings the first edition of Dark Decay Festival, a new gothic convergence set to take over 2Progi in Poznań, across three nights from June 25 to 28. For anyone tired of watching the darker corners of underground music kept in neat little boxes, this festival feels like a rare indulgence: all those feverish forms finally thrown together under one roof, with just enough danger in the air to draw blood.

The event comes from the organizers behind Shadow Dance Party, the long-running concert and DJ series in Poznań, alongside Return To The Batcave, the annual Wrocław festival that has spent nearly twenty years earning the loyalty of Polish and international crowds alike. With Dark Decay Festival, they are taking a broader route, bringing together darkwave projects, harsher deathrock, and post-punk bands for a bill with enough range to satisfy devoted lifers and lure in the curious with the promise of three very full nights and very little sleep.

The first wave of confirmed artists already makes a strong case for showing up early and staying reckless. Selofan, Psyche, Ductape, Soror Dolorosa, Date at Midnight, and Christ vs Warhol are all set to appear, offering a lineup that balances beloved veterans with newer names still climbing toward wider recognition. It is the sort of bill that inspires devotion, debate, and at least one message from a friend claiming they are definitely going before immediately asking whether anyone can split a hotel.

And for those who believe the evening should continue after the bands leave the stage, the festival will host DJ parties every night after the final live set. The promise is simple: dancefloor delirium from dusk till dawn with top DJs and the kind of songs that can turn a room full of strangers into a temporary congregation in black boots.

Dark Decay Festival looks set to give Poland’s gothic calendar a fresh focal point, one built for people who like their summer festivals with a little more romance, a little more ruin, and none of the forced cheer that usually comes with warm weather.

Aux Animaux is the Stockholm-based ‘hauntwave’ project of Gözde Düzer, an Istanbul-born musician whose darkwave blends theremin, dystopian synths, horror imagery, and occult tension. Active since 2015, she has built a one-woman world where goth atmosphere meets political feeling and animal-rights conviction, with songs that feel ritualistic, cinematic, and primed for late-night dance floors and solitary wanderings alike after dark.

Demonizer by aux animaux, Dancing Plague

Christ vs Warhol emerged from Los Angeles in 2008, channeling personal unrest and political disillusionment into a fierce blend of deathrock, post-punk, and gothic urgency. Rooted in DIY ethics and resistance, the band’s music couples dramatic atmosphere with activist bite, turning club-ready darkness into something confrontational, communal, and sharpened by the conviction that underground art should still mean something today.

We, The Victims of History by Christ vs. Warhol

Rosegarden Funeral Party is a Dallas post-punk band led by singer, songwriter, and guitarist Leah Lane, whose emotionally direct writing gives the group its beating heart. Combining goth drama, sharp hooks, and driving rhythms, they have become a modern scene favorite, balancing vulnerability with force while carrying the legacy of classic post-punk into a more personal, open-wounded present tense.

Blame and Burden by Rosegarden Funeral Party

Ductape are an Istanbul duo pushing post-punk and darkwave toward a tense, contemporary edge. Born from Turkey’s underground scene, they draw on the original post-punk revolution without treating it like museum glass, folding urgent emotion, cold electronics, and driving guitars into songs that feel immediate, nocturnal, and restless. Their work bridges the past and present with real conviction and style.

Psyche are dark synth-pop lifers, founded in Edmonton, Alberta in 1982 by brothers Darrin and Stephen Huss, now centered on Darrin Huss in Germany. Across decades, the project has remained devoted to sleek electronics, nocturnal romance, and shadow-kissed dance music, helping shape the underground bridge between early synthpop, darker wave forms, and modern club melancholy with enduring continental influence worldwide.

Bragolin is the Dutch darkwave and post-punk project of Edwin van der Velde, built around strong melodic hooks, baritone guitar, synth textures, and a steady sense of unease. Drawing from several decades of underground sound, Bragolin turns gothic tension into something immediate and danceable, earning a place on contemporary dark floors while keeping one boot planted in classic gloom firmly.

Selofan, the Athens-based duo of Joanna Pavlidou and Dimitris Pavlidis, have spent the past decade reshaping modern darkwave through prolific releases, theatrical poise, and a fatalistic romantic streak. Their music folds minimal synth, coldwave pulse, and multilingual drama into something sensuous and severe, a heaven-and-hell pairing that has made them one of the scene’s most distinctive contemporary acts to date.

Eine Selbstverständlichkeit war das nicht, denn das Medium der Wahl bei POISON RUIN war für mich stets die EP, insbesondere die fantastische „Confrere„: Kurze und knackige Hits, die schneller vorbei waren als man ihrer überdrüssig werden konnte, das passte zu der Band, die das Erbe von WIPERS und HÜSKER DÜ weitertragen möchte und – soviel sei schonmal festgestellt – dazu durchaus die Mittel besitzt.

Allein, die Mittel reichen nicht aus, wenn sie irgendwann ermüden, und deshalb hat Bandkopf Mac Kennedy sich sehr viel Zeit genommen, „Hymn From The Hills“ zu konzipieren sowie mit seiner Band zu proben und aufzunehmen: Ja, auch dieses Album ist selbst aufgenommen worden, in einem neuen, exklusiven Probenraum allerdings, und das hört man direkt: Nicht nur bauen POISON RUIN direkt zu Beginn („Lily Of The Valley“) mit einem dominanten Synthesizer ein neues Element in ihren Sound ein (keine Angst: Aus den meisten anderen Songs hält der sich weitestgehend raus), auch im Laufe des Albums wird immer wieder Neues ausprobiert und generell kompositorisch was gewagt: sphärisch-nerdige Analog-Synthie-Intros, frickelige Übergänge, melancholisch-euphorische Hymnen, sogar richtiger Krach.

„Hymns From The Hills“ – Flickwerk oder schlüssiges Album?
Das war notwendig, um auf Albumlänge bestehen zu können, und da mit dem Titeltrack, „Serpent’s Curse“ und dem unglaublichen „Pilgrimage“ mindestens drei süchtig machende Hits auf der Platte sind, funktioniert das auch, wenngleich der inkonsistente Sound mich nachhaltig verwirrt (ich mag es nicht, wenn einzelne Songs anders klingen als der Rest) und sich im Mittelteil vielleicht doch die ein oder andere Länge eingeschlichen hat („Turn To Dust“ und „Puzzle Box“).

So mag nämlich zunächst der Eindruck entstehen, dass man zwar viel experimentiert und viel will, aber letztlich kein schlüssiges Gesamtkunstwerk hinbekommen hat. Dieser Eindruck verflüchtigt sich jedoch eben, sobald sich einzelne Fixpunkte heraus kristallisiert haben, an denen man sich als Hörer festhalten kann, und ich bin mir sicher, dass auf dem nächsten Album die Band noch kohärenter, noch schlüssiger mit ihren Einflüssen umgehen wird.

POISON RUIN enden mit uglaublich viel Wumms
Denn wie POISON RUIN im letzten Drittel hier nochmal alle Register ziehen und „Hymn From The Hills“ mit einem überraschenden Doppel beenden, ist beeindruckend: „Crescent Sun“ stampft wuchtig und massiv aus den Boxen und geht dann ziemlich geil in „The Standoff“ über, einem ihrer vielleicht schmissigsten Songs überhaupt. Sowieso hat alles unglaublich viel Wumms (Mix: Jonah Falco, Master: niemand geringerer als der mächtige Arthur Rizk), was der Band auch mal richtig gut tut, zumal sie durch den Ansatz, trotzdem alles selber im Probenraum aufzunehmen, immer noch genug Dreck im Sound hat.

Also doch der große Wurf? Kommt drauf an, ob du die trockene, angepisste Seite der Band besser findest als ihre epische, melancholische. Beides findet sich auf „Hymn From The Hills“, aber für mich hätte der epische Aspekt noch mehr Raum bekommen dürfen – es gibt einfach schon genug Düsterpunk wie die Single „Eidolon“ auf der Welt. Da das Album aber dramaturgisch prima als solches funktioniert und genügend düstere Höhepunkte bietet, bleibt mir nur, ein zufriedenes „Prost!“ nach Philadelphia zu schicken und mich auf das zu freuen, was da noch kommen mag.

Fünf Jahre nach „Your Time to Shine“ bringen MONOLORD wieder eine Platte raus: „Neverending“ erscheint am 29. Mai 2026 via Relapse Records. Im November ist das Trio auf Europatour, bei den Konzerten unterstützt Per Wiberg (ex-OPETH, SPIRITUAL BEGGARS) als Live-Gitarrist die Sludge-Band.

Als erste Single teilten MONOLORD ein Video zu „You Bastard“:

 

„Neverending“ enstand in Zusammenarbeit mit Sylvia Massy, die recht vel Einfluß auf die Songauswahl hatte. Sänger und Gitarristen Thomas Jäger berichtet:

„Sie forderte mich auf, ihr alles zu schicken, was wir hatten – nicht nur die für das Album geschriebenen Songs, sondern jedes einzelne Riff und jede Idee. Ich habe ihr sogar Sachen dazugepackt, die ich vor zehn Jahren geschrieben habe. Sie hat sich alles angehört und uns eine Liste geschickt, woran sie arbeiten wollte.“

Die Band probte 12 Songs, nahm 11 auf und wählte schließlich acht für „Neverending“ aus.

SEPULTURA sind in diesem Jahr auf ihrer Abschiedtour, nach Konzerten in den USA kommt die Band im Sommer auch nach Deutschland. Im Oktober 2024 hatten SEPULTURA angekündigt, die Band nach 40 Jahren und einer letzten Tour zu Grabe zu tragen. Als letzte Studioveröffentlichung erscheint am 24. April 2026 die EP “ The Cloud of Unknowing“.

Als zweite Single stellt die Band den Track „Beyond The Dream“ vor, anhören kann man ihn auf den gängigen Streamingportalen.

Zum Song ‚The Place‘ haben SEPULTURA jetzt ein Video geteilt, Sänger Derrick Green erklärt den Hintergrund des Tracks:

Dieser Song handelt von Einwanderern. Sie sind an einen Ort gekommen, in der Hoffnung Zuflucht zu finden und ein neues Leben beginnen zu können. Sie integrierten sich, erlebten falsche Sicherheit und gnadenlose Progaganda. Irgendwann begannen sie jedoch, gegen das vorzugehen, was sie inzwischen an sich selbst hassten. Sie konnten ihrem Selbsthass und den Angriffen auf Menschen, die so dachten und fühlten wie sie, entkommen. Der Text spiegelt den Wandel des Songs wirklich gut wider:  Er beginnt mit Enttäuschung und endet in Wut.“

DOMINUM haben ihr drittes Studioalbum angekündigt: „Night Is Calling“ erscheint am 3. Juli 2026 via Napalm Records auf CD, Vinyl sowie digital. Das Album  enthält 13 Tracks, darunter zwei Akustikstücke als Bonus-Dreingabe. Den limitierten Ausgaben liegt zudem das Live-Album „Live At Wacken 2025“ bei.

Vier Fünftel der KING DIAMOND-Besetzung aus den späten 80er Jahren haben sich zur Band LEX LEGION zusammengetan, zur Besetzung gehören Mikkey Dee, Andy La Rocque, Pete Blakk und Hal Patino, dazu gesellt sich Sänger Nils K. Rue (PAGAN’S MIND).

VANDEN PLAS veröffentlichen ein weiteres Akustikalbum: „AcCult II“ erscheint am 12. Juni 2026 über Frontiers Music Srl. Bereits 1996 brachten VANDEN PLAS mit „AcCult“ ein Akustikalbum mit eigenen und fremden Songs raus.

Giterrist Stephan Lill erklärte, wie das Album entstanden ist:

„Als wir 1996 unsere erste Akustik-CD ‚AcCult‘ veröffentlichten, war das etwas Besonderes. Wir arrangierten Akkustik-Versionen von den Track unseres Debütalbums ‚Colour Temple‘ und Songs anderer Künstler oder Bands, die nicht unbedingt zu unserem Stil passten. Seitdem haben wir immer wieder mit den Gedanken gespielt, eine weitere Akustik-CD zu produzieren. Aber dann kamen Tourneen, weitere reguläre CDs, Theaterproduktionen und die Zeit verging wie im Flug.  Dann kamen Frontiers mit der Idee einer weiteren Akustik-CD auf uns zu und wir hatten Zeit, mit den richtigen Songs könnte es funktionieren. Und wir können nun sagen: Es hat geklappt. Wir sind dem Konzept der ersten „AcCult“-CD treu geblieben, und so enthält „AcCult II“ erneut Akustikversionen von VANDEN-PLAS-Songs sowie zwei Cover-Songs: „Nothing Else Matters“ (METALLICA) und „Boat on the River“ (STYX)“.

Es beginnt mit einem Schrei, denn die wichtigsten Transformationen beginnen nun mal mit einem Schrei. Wie bei der Geburt: Die werdende Mutter schreit, und auch das Baby, sobald es das Licht der Welt erblickt. Denn der Schrei ist wichtig, damit das Kind lernt zu atmen. Der Schrei stimmt uns ein auf die transformative Kraft einer Initiation, der Schrei sammelt Energie und Stärke. Doch der Schrei erstickt auch oft. In der Kehle des Rezensenten an einem Tag voller schlechter Nachrichten, wenn plötzlich, in der Gemüseabteilung stehend, die Nachricht eintrifft, dass NEUROSIS wieder komplett sind, mit Aaron Turner, und dass sie gerade eben ihr dreizehntes Album „An Undying Love For A Burning World“ veröffentlicht haben. Dabei braucht es auch hier einen Schrei, einen des Jubels, einen der Erleichterung. Denn das ist ein Full-Circle-Moment, und dieser muss laut und aus vollem Herzen begrüßt werden.

NEUROSIS setzen ein klares Statement – das macht schon der Titel „An Undying Love For A Burning World“ deutlich.
So wie NEUROSIS ihre Wiedergeburt mit einem Schrei begrüßen. „We Are Torn Wide Open“, schreien sie als Kanon des Schmerzes heraus. STEVE VON TILL sprach über das Thema der Entfremdung bereits vor einem Jahr, jetzt greift er das Thema mit der gesamten Band auf. Und wie könnte es nicht schmerzen? Immerhin fand auch in der Band eine Entfremdung statt. Dass NEUROSIS sich von SCOTT KELLY trennten, diesem scheinbar integeren Mann in der integersten Band überhaupt, hinterließ eine klaffende Wunde, auch in den Herzen der Fans. NEUROSIS schienen aber bereits zuvor müde. „Honor Found In Decay“ konnte man sich noch Schönhören, „Fires Within Fires“ hingegen zeigte die Band nur noch als traurigen Schatten ihrer selbst. Ob es nun an Neumitglied Aaron Turner (ex-ISIS, SUMAC) liegt, oder daran, dass die NEUROSIS ihre Kräfte gesammelt und wieder ihre Essenz gefunden haben, sei dahin gestellt, aber „An Undying Love For A Burning World“ zeigt die Band mit gereifter Perspektive und der Energie von vor 30 Jahren.

Und sie schreien sich die Lunge aus dem Leib in den ersten 50 Sekunden des gut einstündigen Werks. Sie reißen damit ein Tor auf: „Mirror Deep“ startet gleich mit einem brachialen Riff, Industrial-Grooves, und ist an Heaviness kaum zu überbieten, mit Vocals, die klingen, als platze der Brustkorb. Keine zwei Minuten nach diesem Auftakt schnaufen NEUROSIS erstmalig durch, nur um dann einen Gang hochzuschalten und die Intensität in der zweiten Hälfte nochmalig zu steigern. Das Spiel mit Dynamik und Geschwindigkeit beherrschen NEUROSIS noch immer. Aaron Turner erweist sich hier als einzig logische Möglichkeit, die klaffende Lücke zu schließen, und wird es im Laufe des Albums immer wieder beweisen. „Mirror Deep“ ist indes ein kompakter, aber weit ausholender Song, der in weniger als sechs Minuten absolut vollständig wirkt. Daneben steht mit „Untethered“ noch ein kurzer Song auf „An Undying Love For A Burning World“, der ebenso vollständig klingt, sich ins Gesamtbild einfügt und dennoch mit einem kleinen Amp Rep-Noiserock-Anteil leicht heraussticht.

Aaron Turner ist der Perfect Fit für „An Undying Love For A Burning World“: NEUROSIS klingen so relevant wie zuletzt im Jahr 2004.
Insgesamt dominiert bei NEUROSIS aber wie üblich das große Panorama und das große Epos. Mindestens acht Minuten dauern die meisten Stücke auf dem Album, die zwischen Verzweiflung, Wut und einer zarten Hoffnung pendeln. Freilich, „An Undying Love For A Burning World“ zermalmt mit seinen kratzigen und krachenden Riffs die Subtilität, aber sie ist nicht totzukriegen. „First Red Rays“ startet mit einem Riff, das einen echten Aaron Turner-Moment hat und erst langsam, dann im Uptempo eine Gesangsperformance bietet, die früher ein feuchter Traum gewesen wäre: Turner und VON TILL ergänzen sich derart gut als brüllende Sänger, dass die Luft wegbleibt. Der leise Mittelteil atmet einen Hauch psychedelischen Friedens mit sich umgarnenden Gitarren und Synthesizern, bevor die Härte wieder überhandnimmt und ganz am Ende STEVE VON TILL stimmlich Trost spendet, trotz der Instrumente am Anschlag. Ähnlich gewaltig ist „Seething And Scattered“, dessen Beginn wie ein Schlag ins Gesicht wirkt und dessen verspielter Mittelteil in ein lautes Noise-Crescendo übergeht.

Auch die Rhythmussektion ist auf diesem Album mit vollem Herzen dabei. Dave Edwardson, der endlich auch wieder seine unnachahmlichen Growls der Band schenkt, groovt mit einem stellenweise gewaltig verzerrtem, dann wieder mit einem atmosphärischen Post Punk-Sound. Besonders ergreifend ist Jason Roeders Performance. Der Drummer, der zwischenzeitlich seinen Rückzug aus der Musikwelt erklärt hatte, ist durch die neue Banddynamik so beflügelt, dass seine kräftigen Rhythmen ihre eigene Erlösung bieten. Die Rhythmen erden die Musik, wie in „Blind“, das mit seinem getragenen Tempo ein wenig nach „The Last To Know“ von „Times Of Grace“ klingt, ist aber dank des atmosphärischen Mittelteils von Noah Landis deutlich vielschichtiger. Wie STEVE VON TILL hier voller Trauer singt und Aaron Turner parallel als Gegenstück brüllt, kann man nicht umhin, als hier einen der ergreifendsten Momente des Albums zu erkennen.

NEUROSIS balancieren Dissonanz und Dynamik exzellent aus: „An Undying Love For A Burning World“ beweist, dass die Band ihr Handwerk nach wie vor beherrscht.
„An Undying Love For A Burning World“ ist ein Alles-Oder-Nichts-Album, ein ultimativer Moment in der Subkultur zwischen Metal, Hardcore und Punk. Es geht um Verbindung, daraus, das Schweigen zu brechen, angesichts der Verbrechen gegen den Planeten. Und damit letztendlich auch gegen alle Spezies, die Menschheit eingeschlossen. Wie sich im Angesicht dieser großen Katastrophen NEUROSIS erheben und so direkt wie nie zuvor ihre Agenda kommunizieren, ist Statement genug. Dass dieser Auftritt so wirkmächtig ist, spricht für die große Lücke, die NEUROSIS in den letzten Jahren hinterließen, die weder CULT OF LUNA, noch AMENRA oder THE OCEAN zur Gänze schließen konnten. Somit sorgt dieses Album, diese wiedererstarkte Band für eine universelle Verbindung – und das kann gar nicht hoch genug angerechnet werden.

In den letzten beiden Songs fährt „An Undying Love For A Burning World“ dann die ganz großen Momente auf. „In The Waiting Hours“ startet dabei sehr leise, daraus bricht nach zweieinhalb Minuten aber das Riff heraus, das für Tage im Gedächtnis bleibt. Dieser Moment ist der vielleicht größte, den NEUROSIS in dieser Stunde bieten. Die Variationen, die daraus entstehen, sind gehaltvoll genug, um die zehn Minuten immer wieder aufwallen zu lassen, bis die Riffs an den Emotionen der Musiker brechen. Die Steigerung dessen ist „Last Light“, das innovativste der acht Stücke. Es beginnt rein elektronisch, mit einem nervösen Beat und Synthesizer-Drones, über die Aaron Turners Stimme in Hysterie abgleitet. Nach zweieinhalb Minuten erwächst daraus ein klassischer NEUROSIS-Song, der sich glazial und mit unbändiger Kraft über das Intro schiebt. In fünf Sätzen zwischen Verzweiflung, Wut und Hoffnung bewegt sich der Song in seinen siebzehn Minuten etwas fragmentarisch dem Ende des Albums entgegen. Und ja, er hätte gestrafft werden dürfen – „Last Light“ mit seinen prophetischen Lyrics ist aber als solches schon ein selbstbewusstes Statement; da darf es auch den großen Auftritt bekommen.

Mit „An Undying Love For A Burning World“ wird das Erbe bewahrt und die Geschichte fortgesetzt: NEUROSIS schenken ihren Fans einen Full Circle-Moment.
„An Undying Love For A Burning World“ ist einer der definitiven NEUROSIS-Momente, wie bereits „Enemy Of The Sun“, „Through Silver In Blood“, „Times Of Grace“ und „The Eye Of Every Storm“. Ein Album, das für sich steht, mehr als jedes andere zuvor, sich aber dennoch stimmig in die Diskografie der Band einfügt. Mit leichten Anpassungen, nicht nur geschuldet durch Aaron Turner, sondern auch durch ein leichtes Öffnen des eigenen Stils. Dazu gehört natürlich auch, dass der 2024 verstorbene Steve Albini als langjähriger Produzent ersetzt werden musste. KOWLOON WALLED CITY-Gitarrist Scott Evans ist als Toningenieur für Aufnahmen und Mix aber eine exzellente Wahl – sein Sound ist frisch und absolut voluminös; trotz der Heaviness ist jedes Detail zu erkennen. So maßgeblich Steve Albinis Produktionen auch waren, und so sehr Albinis Erbe bewahrt werden muss: Dieses Album klingt besser.

Dass NEUROSIS überhaupt wieder zurückgekehrt sind, zeugt von Ermächtigung. Und somit konnte dieses Album gar nicht schiefgehen, selbst wenn die Musik darauf völlig misslungen gewesen wäre. Dass NEUROSIS zehn Jahre nach ihrem bisher letzten Werk eines der besten Alben ihrer Karriere glücken würde, war noch vor zwei Wochen völlig undenkbar. So ist „An Undying Love For A Burning World“ ein Statement, ein stures Nicht-Aufgeben-Wollen angesichts dessen, auf das die Menschheit zuzusteuern scheint. Aber Aufgeben ist keine Option, nicht für Menschen mit dem Ethos von NEUROSIS, nicht für ihr Publikum, egal wie schwer die Wolken über dem Firmament hängen mögen. Denn es existiert noch Verbindung zwischen den Menschen, nicht zuletzt durch die Kraft der Musik. Dieser Urschrei namens „An Undying Love For A Burning World“ ist der lebende Beweis dafür.

Frankie Fest is back for 2026, and if you’ve spent any time in this city’s clubs and secret canal barge parties, you already know what that means: a packed floor, a few blown speakers, somebody hanging perilously upside down, and a crowd that came to feel a little less alone.  Frankie Fest takes over Brooklyn’s House of Yes on Sunday, May 3rd, running from 8:00 PM to 1:00 AM, pulling in NYC’s queer and allied underground.

The festival honors Frankie Maddox Rex, and there’s no polite way to say it: Frankie’s absence still stings. As co-founder and co-vocalist of The FMs, they were one of those figures who made things happen; the kind of person who could illuminate a room just by stepping into it. Since their passing in 2022, this gathering has taken on a strange dual charge: part remembrance, part release…with a lineup that barrels through alt-rock, punk, and performance art. Over the past few years, Frankie Fest has become a place where trans, non-binary, and queer artists claim their rightful space, where the line between stage and floor dissolves into joyful mayhem.

Headlining the 2026 festival is the legendary San Antonio indie-punk trio Girl In A Coma, marking a massive Brooklyn return following their recent reunion. Joining them at the top of the bill is genre-defying alt-pop dynamo Boy Jr., alongside explosive sets from local heavyweights UgLi, Cat Crash, Theophobia, and Villins.

Festival co-founders Miss Cherry Delight and The FMs will also take the stage, honoring the festival’s namesake.

To match the world-class spectacle of House of Yes, the musical lineup will be interwoven with continuous, boundary-pushing theatrical acts. The festival features a curated cast of spectacular burlesque, drag, and variety performers. Anchoring the night and transitioning the live rock showcase into a late-night dance party is DJ Goth Dad, the acclaimed DJ project of Dusty Gannon, frontman for the post-punk powerhouse Vision Video.

Montreal’s Douce Angoisse comes on like a bad idea dressed in couture: sleek, severe, and fully aware of the damage it might do. This independent French darkwave/coldwave project deals in raw, minimal pressure, where punk impulse meets cold electronic restraint across English, Spanish, and French. The result feels built for those late hours when desire, disgust, and dead-eyed detachment start wearing the same face.

The EP opens with Intro Xanax and Coffee, an instrumental that sets the table with real menace. It doesn’t waste time dressing the room. The track feels like fluorescent light on dirty tile, a synthetic crawl that prepares you for the damage to come, and it does so with enough tension to make even silence seem suspicious. From there, Can’t Get Away locks into the central trap of the whole record: the mind as a holding cell, the self as the one jailer who never clocks out. The beat keeps moving with bleak purpose while the atmosphere closes in, and that friction gives the song its sour charge.

Egoista carries a more poisonous kind of glamour. There’s vanity in it, with cracked lipstick and a cruel little grin, the kind that turns self-fixation into performance and performance into a slow emotional mugging. Repetition often works in the same mindset as obsession, and here that instinct lands hard. Dance to Death follows with a lurid, flesh-and-machine menace, pushing the EP deeper into its nocturnal descent. It’s the closest this release comes to pure seduction, though even then the seduction feels contaminated, like a kiss delivered with ulterior motives and perfect timing.

Xanax and Coffee takes the title’s miserable chemistry and runs with it beautifully. It sounds strung out, spiritually singed, and half in love with its own collapse, channeling the queasy push-pull between stimulation and sedation, between wanting oblivion and wanting one more hour before it arrives. Little Fucker, meanwhile, spits with a sharper tongue. It’s confrontational, bitter, and weirdly funny in the most poisoned sense, the kind of track that seems to enjoy drawing blood just to watch the expression on your face afterward.

Throughout the record, you can hear traces of classic artists like Front Line Assembly and Clock DVA, as well as contemporaries such as Lana Del Rabies, Rare DM, and Boy Harsher in the machinery, mood, and sense of erotic decay.  It feels personal in the ugliest, strongest sense: raw, repetitive, and alive with psychic abrasion. These are dystopian dance tracks for people who know the party and the breakdown sometimes happen in the same room, under the same red bulb, with the same body keeping time through both.

Darker Waves Festival is scheduled to return to Huntington Beach, California, on November 14, 2026. No lineup has been announced yet. The festival is currently directing fans to sign up for updates through its official website.

The newly released promotional image confirms the date and location, billing the event simply as taking place “on the beach” in Huntington Beach. At the moment, no artists, ticketing details, or additional event information have been made public.

The previous edition of Darker Waves took place on November 18, 2023. That inaugural festival featured a lineup led by New Order and Tears for Fears, with additional performances by Echo & The Bunnymen, Devo, Soft Cell, The Psychedelic Furs, OMD, The Human League, and Violent Femmes.

The 2023 bill also included a substantial number of acts from across the post-punk, darkwave, goth, synthpop, and alternative spectrum, among them Molchat Doma, Drab Majesty, Twin Tribes, Cold Cave, Mareux, London After Midnight, Clan of Xymox, The Chameleons, Christian Death, 45 Grave, Skeletal Family, Glass Spells, and Urban Heat.

As previously reported by Post-Punk.com, the first festival was positioned as a large-scale beach event centered on legacy new wave and post-punk acts alongside newer artists working in related styles. Local event information published ahead of the 2023 edition indicated that the festival site used three stages on the sand and included shuttle and rideshare access for attendees.

No comparable logistical details have been published yet for the 2026 event. It also remains unclear when the lineup, ticket on-sale date, and festival map will be announced.

Blues Rock-Gitarrist KENNY WAYNE SHEPHERD hat anlässlich des 30-jährigen Jubiläums seines Debütalbums „Ledbetter Heights“ (1995) eine Jubiläumsausgabe der Platte angekündigt. Hierfür nahm der Musiker die Songs im Rahmen der „30th Anniversary Sessions“ neu auf.

Erscheinen wird das Album am 8. Mai 2026 via RAM Records /Thirty Tigers. Shepherd selbst erklärt dazu:

„Das ist das Album, das mich bekannt gemacht hat, und ich höre es immer noch gerne, denn mein Ziel war es schon immer, Musik zu machen, die ich selbst hören möchte: ungefiltert und direkt aus dem Herzen.“

Reinhören ist vorab in die SIngle „Deja Voodoo“ möglich.
