What were we If no sound remains 

When the Reverb Ends is a song title that immediately suggests aftermath: the instant when atmosphere clears, when sensation settles, and whatever was buried beneath volume and echo is left exposed. Black Reverie, a project conceived by Sebastian Lugli of Rev Rev Rev and joined by players from Desert Ships, The Stargazer Lilies, and We Melt Chocolate, introduces itself with a debut that treats texture as more than mere adornment. Beneath the gossamer wash of guitar and reverb, there is a careful emotional architecture at work, one that gives the song its shape and quiet force.

The track draws from familiar psych and shoegaze lineages, yet it carries itself with elegance. You can hear echoes of My Bloody Valentine, The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Warlocks, and Sixties psych (think Nuggets), but those references are folded into something more personal: a piece that values atmosphere while still trusting melody, tension, and restraint. Lugli’s glide guitars and tremolo lend the arrangement a sense of motion that feels at once fluid and disorienting, while the bass provides a grounded, almost vintage momentum. Above it, effervescent female vocals bring a soft luminosity. The music feels expansive, but it never loses its center. Black Reverie uses reverb, fuzz, and melodic haze to sharpen the emotional impression at the song’s core.

The collaborative dimension is crucial here; the song benefits from that interplay, from the sense that each contribution enlarges its emotional field without disturbing its internal balance.

“Watching Thrashers by Michael Wild, I felt a sensation that words can’t quite explain, but that I tried to give shape to through this music and these lyrics,” says Lugli. That impulse feels guided by an attempt to translate an elusive impression into form, and much of its appeal lies in how gracefully it sustains that effort. “I laid the foundations with a very Sixties bassline and a similarly vintage harmony, then added my guitar sounds on top,” he continues. “The magic thing is that what made this feeling complete were the contributions of Kim and John (The Stargazer Lilies): when I heard their parts, I got goosebumps. They’ve actually given voice to my dreams – that’s the magic of collaborating with artists like them.”

And the dreams in these lyrics poignantly circle memory, distance, and dissolution, asking what remains once echo, noise, and the emotional force of the past have faded. In fact, “When the Reverb Ends” treats reverb not just as a musical effect but as a metaphor for longing itself: the residue of love, youth, or shared experience still hanging in the air after the moment has passed. The repeated plea to “take me back” gives the song its aching core, while images of warp, decay, delay, and far-off stars suggest a search for origin through distortion, as if the speaker is trying to trace feeling back to its source before time and distance swallowed it whole.

Be Hussey’s mix serves the material beautifully, giving the song depth and breadth, but also clarity, preserving its density without letting it collapse into blur. By the close, Black Reverie have answered their own central question in subtle fashion: when the reverb ends, what remains is not emptiness, but contour—feeling held in suspension, then gently brought into focus. For a debut single, When the Reverb Ends makes a striking first impression, introducing Black Reverie as a project with both vision and finesse.

Am 16. Januar 2026 veröffentlichten THE ETERNAL ihre neue EP „Celestial“. Heute teilte die Band zum fünften Song der EP ein Video, damit gibt es zu jedem der Songs einen clip:

1999 wurde ich durch den Song „Salme“ vom Album „Evil 1999“ auf TULUS durch eine Heft-CD aufmerksam. Es könnte eine CD aus dem Kultzine Ablaze gewesen sein, dass weiß ich aber nicht mehr genau. Jedenfalls haben mich der Sound, die akustische Gitarre und der cleane Gesang so gepackt, dass ich mir das Album direkt zugelegt habe. Auch wenn der Rest des Albums etwas zu sperrig für mich war, zu der Zeit, habe ich diesen Song immer wieder aufgelegt. Erst fast 25 jahre später, 2023, konnten mich TULUS mit ihrem letzten Album „Fandens Kall“ (Review hier) wieder richtig packen. Dazwischen habe ich eher Khold als TULUS gehört.
Letzten Freitag erschien dann mit „Morbid Desires“ der Nachfolger von „Fandens Kall“, Album Nummer 8.
Und was sehe ich da?
Der Opener des Albums ist „Salme II“, geil!
Er ist auch erkennbar an den Song aus 1999 angelehnt und hat mich direkt gepackt.
Aber genau wie bei „Evil 1999“ war der Rest des Albums erst schwer zugänglich für mich.
Im Gegensatz zu den zuletzt immer gezeichneten Cover, war mir das Cover von „Morbid Desires“ zu klinisch, auch wenn mir das Motiv grundsätzlich gefällt.
Dann war ich sehr gespannt auf „Salme II“ und wurde nicht enttäuscht. Der Sound ist den aktuellen Standards entsprechend natürlich viel moderner ausgefallen. Der schöne cleane Gesang, wurde zum Glück wieder aufgegriffen. Der Track hat mich direkt überzeugt. Im Schlusspart ab ca. Minute 4 klingt alles sehr geil. Das Schlagzeug, die Gitarren, alles.
Beim folgenden „Skabb“ hatte ich dann das Gefühl, dass die Gitarren wesentlich mehr Verzerrung und Räudigkeit vertragen könnten, aber das ist natürlich Geschmackssache.
Das zwischenzeitlich eingesetzte Klavier setzt schöne Akzente. Auch wenn ich nicht gepackt war, mag ich den Track. „Tulus“ folgt als Track 3 und war dann schon mehr meins, schöne Melodien und er geht mir besser ins Ohr.
Mit „Hedengangen“ als Track 6 kommt dann mein Favorit neben „Salme II“. Im eher rockigen Genre, wird hier ordentlich Druck aufgebaut, der mich zwischendurch tatsächlich an Motörhead denken lässt, auch wenn ich wiederrum mehr Verzerrung bevorzugen würde. Allerdings könnte es auch sein, dass dadurch in einigen Riffs auf dieser Scheibe, etwas Melodisches verloren gehen würde.
Das folgende „Fossegrimens Vakt“ startet mit schönen akustischen Gitarren.
Ich habe wirklich einige Durchgänge gebraucht, um in „Morbid Desires“ hereinzufinden. Das ist bei mir meistens eher ein positives Zeichen für die Halbwertzeit eines Albums.
Auf jeden Fall freue ich mich riesig auf ihren Auftritt auf dem Party.San dieses Jahr und hoffe, dass sowohl „Salme“, als auch „Salme II“ und „Hedengangen“ live gespielt werden. Endlich kann ich die Truppe mal auf einer Bühne sehen.

Überraschung, ULTHA haben ohne weitere Ankündigungen ein neues Album rausgebracht: „A Light So Dim“ gibt’s ab sofort bei bandcamp, ab morgen auch als Dippel-LP, CD, tape und digital Release via Vendetta Records.

„A Light So Dim“ enthält zehn Songs, als Gäste sind Pieter Uyttenhove und Annelies van Dinter (TAKH), Pardis Latifi (DAEVAR) sowie das „sechste Bandmitglied“ Danni Kann und der “Chor Der Damen Ohne Namen“ aus Köln zu hören. Aifgenommen und gemastert hat das Album Andy Rosczy  im Goblin Sound Studio. Das Artwork kommt von Tobias Hahn, fdie Fotos von Max Heckmann.

 

Nachdem wir die Album-Trilogie „Converging Sins“, „The Inextricable Wandering“ und „All That Has Never Been True“ abgeschlossen haben, stellt sich eine Frage: Wohin geht man, wenn man alles verloren hat? Man kann die Niederlage akzeptieren und sterben. Oder man beginnt, zu kämpfen.  Dies ist ein Album über Hoffnung in den finstersten Zeiten. Es ist ein Aufruf an das innere Selbst, einen Licht in einer Welt voller Nebel zu finden.

Die Atmospheric Black Metal-Band SOTABOSC hat mit „El Batec dels Maquis“ ein neues Album angekündigt. Es ist das erste Album der aus Barcelona stammenden Band und wird am 17. April 2026 via Dunk!Records erscheinen. „Freyja“ ist der Titel der zweiten Single-Auskopplung, die ab sofort als Stream verfügbar ist.

„El Batec dels Maquis“ wurde von Daniel Gil im Siete Barbas Studio in Barcelona produziert. Vorab gibt es den über 17 Minuten langen Track „El batec dels Maquis / Records vius en la foscor“ zu hören, welcher den Maquis (also den republikanischen Guerillakämpfern) und ihrem Widerstand gegen Franco in Katalonien während und nach dem Bürgerkrieg Tribut zollt.

SIGNUM REGIS haben ein neues Zuhause: Ab sofort arbeitet die Melodic / Power Metal-Band mit Fireflash Records zusammen. Das kommende Album „Beyond Spacetime“ ist für 9. Oktober 2026 angekündigt. Produziert und gemischt hat das Werk Gitarrist Filip Koluš, das Mastering übernam Miro Kiiski.

Was die Gruppe über „Beyond Spacetime“ denkt, verrät sie in einem Statement:

„Wir sind so zufrieden und stolz darauf! Auch wenn die letzten drei Jahre für die Band nicht einfach waren, ist dies definitiv nicht nur ein ‚nächstes‘ Signum-Regis-Album. Wir sind eine Band, wir streben immer danach, etwas Besonderes zu schaffen – für uns und für die Fans. [Wichtig war,] dass es sich völlig von unseren üblichen Produktionen unterscheiden sollte und wir es so gestalten wollten, wie wir es als Musiker sahen. Wir sind aus unserem gewohnten Stil ausgebrochen, haben im Studio viel mit neuen Dingen experimentiert und King Rex vom Boden ins All teleportiert – was verrückt klingt, aber genau so sollte es sein!“

Die erste Single „Throne Of Gold“ gewährt einen Höreindruck und enthält zudem einen Gastbeitrag von Gitarrist Victor Smolski. Den Gesang übernahm hier Matt Smith (THEOCRACY).

Haben STORY OF THE YEAR einfach einen guten Riecher oder sind sie lediglich wie das Fähnchen im Wind? An ihrem Sound jedenfalls schrauben die US-Amerikaner mit jeder neuen Platte und landen dabei zufälligerweise immer dort, wo es gerade angesagt ist. Dass „A.R.S.O.N.“ im Jahr 2026 also reich an Stimmenmodulation, bratenden Modern-Rock-Riffs und harschen Breaks ist, versteht sich von selbst.

Was indes auf der Strecke bleibt, ist das eigene Profil. Zwar blitzt die Handschrift der Band phasenweise noch hervor, im Großen und Ganzen agiert das Quartett jedoch erkennbar generischer. Der Elan, die Energie, welche die Punk-Rock-DNA vorheriger Veröffentlichungen sicherstellte, nimmt – mit Ausnahme des schmissigen „Halos“ – nunmehr eine Nebenrolle ein. Im Zentrum stehen poppige Melodiebögen, in glatten, eingängigen Refrains bemerkbar machen und von simplen Texten garniert werden. Zu hören ist das besonders deutlich in „See Through“, „My Religion“ oder dem seichten „3 am“ mit seinen Pop-Punk-Vibes.

„A.R.S.O.N.“ fehlt der Charakter, auch wenn STORY OF THE YEAR zu routiniert für eine Bruchlandung sind
Nicht verlernt haben STORY OF THE YEAR dafür das Schreiben lockerer Rock-Songs à la „Disconnected“ oder „Into The Dark“, welches sich in der Strophe bissig zeigt und in der Hook gar zur Hymne mausert. Hier kommt die Erfahrung der Band zum Tragen, die mit der Macht der Routine „A.R.S.O.N.“ letztlich ohne größere Blessuren ins Ziel bringt. Arm an Höhepunkten und Charakter bleibt von der immerhin kompakt gehaltenen Platte letztlich wenig in Erinnerung: Easy-Listening für Modern Rock-Fans lautet das Fazit, das auch die einleitende Frage beantworten dürfte. Die Wahrheit liegt wohl einmal mehr in der Mitte.

Die Alternative Metal / Metalcore-Band PRESIDENT hat mit „Mercy“ eine neue Single mitsamt Video veröffentlicht.

„Im Laufe der Geschichte war Religion stets mit tiefgreifender Spaltung und Verlust verbunden. Dieses Lied ist eine Reflexion über diese Realität und für mich eine Möglichkeit, mich damit auseinanderzusetzen, was das auf menschlicher Ebene bedeutet“, sagt die Band.

Im Februar hat die Band mit „Angel Wings“ eine weitere Single mitsamt Video-Clip veröffentlicht.

„‚Angel Wings‘ spiegelt die Suche nach spiritueller Erlösung und die Entschlossenheit wider, neu anzufangen“, erklärt der maskierte Künstler. „Es markiert den Beginn eines neuen Kapitels. Die Black Metal-Band SICARIUS hat ein Lyric-Video vom Titeltrack – mit Charles Hedger (MAYHEM) als Gast – ihres kommenden Albums „Nex“ veröffentlicht. Es ist nach „Serenade of Slitting Throats“ (2017) und „God of Dead Roots“ (2020) das dritte Album der US-Amerikaner aus Kalifornien und das erste mit dem neuen Sänger Anthony „Akéfalos“ Martinez.

„Nex“ wird am 10. April 2026 via Adirondack Black Mass erscheinen. Vorab gibt es den Track „An Aptitude For Elimination“ zu hören.

Die Sludge Metal-Band DESERT STORM hat einen Labeldeal bei Heavy Psych Sounds Records unterschrieben. Im Zuge dessen haben die Briten am 6. März 2026 ihr neues Album „Buried Under the Weight of Reason“ veröffentlicht. Nach dem Video zu „Law Unto Myself“ gibt es nun auch zum Opener „Newfound Respect“ ein Video.

Mit „Woodsman“ gibt es auch einen Video-Clip.

„Textlich entfernt sich der Song von den Fallstricken der Zivilisation und begibt sich in die ursprüngliche Umarmung der Natur“, sagt die Band. „Inspiriert von zurückgezogenen Wildnisbewohnern aus Mythen und Erinnerungen, reflektiert er über Entsagung, Überleben und Wiederentdeckung. Der Wald wird zum Lehrer und Heiler, zu einem Ort, an dem Wut, Instinkt und wilde Energie mit Staunen, Ehrfurcht und der Weisheit der Vorfahren verschmelzen.“

„Buried Under the Weight of Reason“ ist das siebte Album der aus Oxford stammenden Band und wurde von Joe Clayton (PIJN) gemixt und gemastert. Das Cover-Artwork stammt von Kacper Gilka. Vorab gibt es auch den Track „Shamanic Echoes“ zu hören.

„Der Track ist durchdrungen von ritueller Pflanzenmedizin und Visionen der Vorfahren: Peyote Mescalito und heiliger Rauch öffnen das Tor zu höheren Bewusstseinszuständen. Es ist sowohl eine halluzinogene Reise als auch eine klangliche Initiation“, sagt die Band.

Mit sehr viel Retro-Charme begegnen uns FANGUS mit ihrem Debütalbum „Emerald Dream“: Der in die 60er- und 70er-Jahre versetzte Fuzz / Pschedelic / Heavy Rock der Kanadier atmet den Vibe der legendären Gründerjahre des Rock und Metals und spielt auf der Klaviatur des Retro Rocks groß auf. Die allgegenwärtige Hammond-Orgel darf dabei ebenso wenig fehlen (stark bei den Leads in „Howling Hammer“ oder im sehr gelungenen Zusammenspiel mit den Gitarren beim eingängigen „Shapeshifter“), wie auch der glaubwürdig analoge Sound und die Außendarstellung der Band. Da lacht das Herz, wenn man etwas für den Sound und den Stil von anno dazumal etwas übrig hat.

„Emerald Dream“ wirkt homogen und rund
Dabei funktioniert „Emerald Dream“ als Ganzes: die Scheibe wirkt homogen und rund – mit Ausnahme vielleicht von „Quest For Fire“, das ein wenig bruchstückhaft zusammengesetzt wirkt -, verzeichnet keine Längen (selbst nicht beim instrumentalen Titeltrack) und lebt von coolen Riffs, Orgel-Begleitung sowie dem passenden („Pyre Of Love“) und ja, auch variantenreichen Gesang („Stardust Regulator“). Für ein Debütalbum nenne ich das mal eine äußerst reife Leistung.

Schade… „Interbellum“ ist eines derjenigen Alben, bei denen man spürt, dass deutlich mehr möglich gewesen wäre. Denn kompositorisch bringen CATHUBODUA auf ihrem zweiten Album eine Reihe guter Ideen ein (wie bereits der Opener „Effigy Of Aftermath“ oder das dramatischere „Amidst Gods“ beweist), die in der Umsetzung jedoch durch manche Fehlentscheidung bei der Produktion ein gutes Ergebnis zunichte gemacht haben. Allen voran muss hier der Keyboard-Sound erwähnt werden, der wie eine bloße Midi-Komposition dahinplätschert. Und pikanterweise hat die Band gar keinen nominellen Keyboarder in den Reihen – es sei denn die Violine wurde im Sound derart verfremdet, dass sie wie ein Keyboard klingt… aber nein, warum würde dies Produzent Yarne Heylen (CARNATION) machen sollen. Dagegen sind die symphonischen Elemente, die wahrlich auch keine Offenbarung sind, nahezu professionell. Schade ist dies vor allem für das an sich gute Gitarren-Spiel, das den Symphonic / Power Metal mit leicht folkigem Einschlag („Foretelling“), gut und gerne alleine tragen würde. Ja, vielleicht wäre „Interbellum“ ohne symphonischen und geklimperten Schnickschnack besser gelungen als mit diesen Elementen. Schließlich haben die Belgier mit Sara Vanderheyden auch eine Sängerin, die ihr Fach versteht und unterschiedliche Gesangsarten und Stimmungslagen bedient („Will Unbroken“). Aber es hilft nun einmal alles nichts: wenn es eben solche Störfeuer wie einen verunglückten Keyboard-Sound gibt, macht ein an sich gut erdachtes und partiell gut umgesetztes Album einfach keinen Spaß. Daher nochmals… schade.

Die Gothic Metal-Band HEAVENWOOD hat einen Labeldeal bei Mighty Music unterschrieben. Im Zuge dessen wird die portugiesische Band rund um Ricardo Dias ihr neues Album „The Tarot Of The Boheminans – Part II“ veröffentlichen. Erscheinen soll das neue und sechste Album am 12. Juni 2026 und damit zehn Jahre nach dem bislang letzten Album „The Tarot of the Bohemians“.

„The Tarot Of The Boheminans – Part II“ wurde von Niko HK Krauss in den Vamacara Studios gemixt und gemastert. Das Cover-Artwork stammt von Naya Kotko.

Mit dem Video zu „The Moon“ gibt es nun die erste Vorab-Single. Inspiriert wurde der Song von der achtzehnten Karte im Tarot-Kartendeck und ihrer Symbolik des spirituellen Abstiegs in die Materie, untersucht das Lied die Dualität der Liebe anhand der metaphorischen Beziehung zwischen Sonne und Mond.

Es ist das vierte Album der Dänen aus Kopenhagen.

Die Industrial / Gothic / Punk-Band SAINT AGNES hat mit „The Ghost“ einen weiteren Track ihres kommenden Albums „Your God Fearing Days Are About To Begin“ veröffentlicht.

„Ich habe den Song darüber geschrieben, dass ich oft das Gefühl habe, zu verschwinden, in bestimmten Umgebungen und Situationen unsichtbar zu werden. Mir fehlen die Worte, und ich verschmelze mit dem Hintergrund. Ich habe mir vorgestellt, wie ich tanze, umgeben von Menschen, mich aber völlig allein fühle. Es ist der Soundtrack zu einer heißen, schweißtreibenden Nacht in einem Vampir-Nachtclub, dem Blut-Rave kurz vor Sonnenaufgang“, sagt Frontfrau Kitty A. Austen.

Zuvor hat die Band zum Album-Opener „Good Boy“ einen Video-Clip veröffentlicht.

„‚Good Boy‘ wurde geschrieben, um eine vernichtende Kritik an gehorsamen, unterwürfigen Männern zu üben, die den kapitalistischen Todeskult hochhalten, die Maschine füttern und dies als Tugend bezeichnen. Es ist eine bissige Abrechnung mit den sogenannten „Good Boys“, die sich bei Unternehmen einschleimen und ihre Komplizenschaft wie ein Abzeichen tragen“, sagt Frontfrau Kitty A. Austen.

Zuvor hat die Band nach „The Father, The Son and The Holy Beast“ mit „Song For Mia“ eine weitere Single des Albums mitsamt Video-Clip veröffentlicht.

„“Song For Mia“ ist eine Hommage an meine beste Freundin aus Teenagerzeiten und unsere frühen Teenagerjahre – eine Hommage an die Unschuld der Jugend. Wir verbrachten unsere Nächte bei einander zu Hause, hingen rum, machten nichts und hatten nichts vor. Oft lagen wir auf dem Trampolin im Garten, starrten in die Sterne und träumten von unserer Zukunft. Die Shoegaze / Post-Punk-Band THE DHARMA CHAIN hat mit „Some Kind Of Pure State“ ein neues Album angekündigt. Es ist nach „Nowhere“ (2022) das zweite Album der ursprünglich aus Australien stammenden Band, die sich inzwischen in Berlin niedergelassen hat.

Das Album handelt von der Klarheit, die auf das Chaos folgt; es ist ein Zeugnis der Verwandlung, geprägt von der stillen Orientierungslosigkeit des Wandels. Das Album verwebt Themen wie Liebe in ihren vielfältigen Formen, Sucht, politische Strömungen und die Suche nach Sinn im Alltag. Diese Ideen treten eher als Reflexionen denn als Bekenntnisse zutage, geboren aus den Turbulenzen und der Zärtlichkeit eines Lebens im Wandel.

Die Modern Metal / Metalcore-Band SENKI hat einen Labeldeal bei Wormholedeath Records unterschrieben. Im Zuge dessen haben die Ungarn am 13. März 2026 ihre neue EP „Szilánkok“ veröffentlicht. Die Alternative Metal-Band MALLAVORA hat mit „Host“ ein weiteres Video ihres neuen Albums „What If Better Never Comes?“ veröffentlicht.

Zuvor hat die Band dem Track „Lilith & Esther“ mit „Hopeless“ ein weiteres Video veröffentlicht.

„Wir haben diesen Song zu einer Zeit geschrieben, als uns alles einfach zu schwer vorkam und die Herausforderungen, denen wir gegenüberstanden, unüberwindbar schienen. Wir haben gelernt, dass es in Ordnung ist, seine Schutzhaltung aufzugeben, seine tapfere Miene abzulegen und zu akzeptieren, dass es so etwas wie Gewissheit eigentlich nicht gibt. Die Möglichkeit, dass sich die Dinge vielleicht nicht verbessern, kann beängstigend sein und fühlt sich so schwer an. Aber es geht nicht darum, die Hoffnung ganz aufzugeben. Vielmehr geht es darum, Dinge loszulassen, über die wir keine Kontrolle haben, und zu versuchen, die Balance zwischen Akzeptanz und Hoffnung zu finden. Wir wissen, dass Hoffnungslosigkeit unglaublich einsam sein kann, deshalb hoffen wir, dass dieser Song allen, die sich mit seiner Bedeutung identifizieren können, Trost und Verbundenheit schenkt“, sagt die Band.

Einige Wochen davor ist mit dem Video-Clip zu „Waste“ eine zweite Vorab-Single des Albums „erschienen.

„Der Track setzt sich mit Frauenfeindlichkeit und den unmöglichen Erwartungen an Frauen auseinander. Er ist bissig, scharf und fast schon fröhlich in seiner Anklage gegen dieses weit verbreitete gesellschaftliche Übel“, erklärt die Band.

„What If Better Never Comes?“ wird am 27. März 2026 via Church Road Records erscheinen.

„Das Album ist eine konzeptionelle Auseinandersetzung mit Krankheit – sowohl auf persönlicher als auch auf gesellschaftlicher Ebene – und hat uns den Raum gegeben, unsere Erfahrungen mit Anderssein auf neue und umfassende Weise auszudrücken. Wir hoffen, dass seine Verletzlichkeit und die Botschaft, die es vermittelt, allen Trost und Katharsis bringt, die jemals mit Emotionen gelebt haben, die zu komplex sind, um sie in Worte zu fassen“, sagt die Band.

Als erste Vorab-Single hat die Band im September 2025 „Smile“ mitsamt Video-Clip veröffentlicht. Der Inhalt des Tracks zielt auf die anhaltende Misshandlung von Menschen mit Behinderung durch die Gesellschaft ab.

„Wir wollten die Dringlichkeit, die Wut und die gerechte Empörung einfangen, die wir darüber empfinden, wie die Gesellschaft
Menschen mit Behinderung weiterhin behandelt“, sagt die Band.

Davor haben die Briten zwei EPs veröffentlicht.

Die Black / Death Metal-Band BRINGERS OF DISEASE hat mit „Sulphur“ ein neues Album angekündigt. Es ist nach zwei EPs das erste Album der US-Amerikaner aus Ohio.

„Im Jahr 2010 verlor ich innerhalb weniger Tage meine Vollzeitband, meine langjährige Beziehung und mein Zuhause, während ich auf Tournee in Europa war…“, erinnert sich Gitarrist Jeff Wilson (CHROME WAVES, ex-NACHTMYSTIUM, ex-WOLVHAMMER). „Jason (Phillips (ACHERON)) war der einzige Mensch, der so freundlich war, mir eine Unterkunft zu geben, bis ich wieder auf die Beine kam. In dieser Zeit nahmen wir das erste Demo von BRINGERS OF DISEASE auf. Ich bin froh, dass ich fünfzehn Jahre später wieder dabei bin und dabei helfen kann, die Band auf ein neues Level zu bringen. The Catskills rise like an afterthought of God, blue with distance and old weather, their ridges holding the hush of vanished sermons, folk memory, and dream. In those eerie mountains, Washington Irving found a young nation teaching itself to haunt and be haunted. Later, the area’s numerous artist colonies came for the lush scenery, as well as that sly disturbance the mountains offer: the sense that the visible world is only half the arrangement. In that way, they anticipated surrealist thought, where landscape opens into symbol, omen, and desire, much like the woods that haunted David Lynch’s imagination: beautiful, secretive, and never entirely innocent.

New York City duo of Russ Marshalek and Laura Hajek, aka a place both wonderful and strange, work the seam where darkwave, art damage, dance-floor ache, and film-fed dread rub shoulders in a very cramped elevator. Ten years is long enough for a lot of things to rot, ripen, or get rediscovered in a shoebox. In the case of a place both wonderful and strange and their album Matter and Desire, that long gestation seems to have done something stranger and better: they let the music sit in its own fumes until it came out lean, mean, and a little bug-eyed, like it had spent a decade staring at the flowers on the wall, ‘smoking cigarettes and watching Captain Kangaroo.’ Perhaps those ancient mountains still have a few tricks up their sleeve, after all.

On their new single It’s Not That Bad, Muffin, they take that sensibility to the hamlet of Catskill, NY, and send it skidding into a bad-day loop, both musically and in their visuals.  The fuzzed out trip-hop instrumental, channeling the heavier offerings of Ladytron, Massive Attack, Portishead, and Björk, moves like somebody trying to keep their chin up while the universe keeps slipping banana peels under their boots…then a mournful sax comes out of nowhere with a siren’s call. You can practically hear fate coughing politely into its sleeve.

The eerie video, made with Lucy Swope and Sean Dack (aka Ghost Cop), shows that any truly rotten day has its own rhythm. It folds in on itself, repeats, and mocks your attempts at dignity. The band takes cues from Maya Deren’s Meshes of the Afternoon, especially that marvelous ability to make time feel bent, bruised, and paranoid, with a little David Lynch in the air and tossed with a dash of Groundhog Day and the DIY rawness of The Blair Witch Project.  (But who is really the dreamer?)

The title of a place both wonderful and strange’s Matter and Desire comes from Andreas Weber’s Matter and Desire: An Erotic Ecology. The band’s own account of the album’s slow formation is one of the best things about the project, because it carries that mix of fatigue, faith, and accidental stubbornness that often leads to records worth keeping: “We kept collecting sounds and lyrics, and at times even full songs, like our version of “I am stretched on your grave”, but there was never a reason, or really a desire, to finish this album,” they say.

Life, friendship, and the rude fact of performance kicked it back into motion. They describe finally hauling the material onstage and feeling it snap alive: “We took the stuff we’d been noodling on for half a decade and mustered up a live performance, and it stunned us how fierce, visceral and vital that show felt.”

Matter and Desire lives in the instant before change. Apocalypse appears in personal, political, and natural forms, and the band treats each one less like a grand abstract theme than a nasty practical problem. One song steps toward the light, the next eyes the ditch again. That back-and-forth gives the album its bite. People alter course only when circumstance corners them, and this record knows it.

After years of side projects, performances, Twin Peaks invocations, and the sort of artistic cross-pollination that tends to keep musicians weird in the healthiest possible way, a place both wonderful and strange have returned with a full-length that feels lived in, singed at the edges, and smart enough to keep a crooked grin on its face. It is a record for the dance floor, the dead-end street, the stalled car, the cracked mirror, and anybody who has ever muttered what the hell now and kept moving anyway.

San Francisco’s Octavian Winters returns with “Elements of Air,” a lush and dramatic new single that moves with the heightened tension of an Expressionist dream, where light and dark lean against one another in every frame. Produced by William Faith and appearing just ahead of the group’s Western US dates with Pink Turns Blue, the single carries itself with the confidence of a band already speaking in a distinct language: one fluent in deathrock urgency, post-punk bite, gothic grandeur, and the more diaphanous drift of darkwave.

Elements of Air hovers and lunges at once, circling around the idea that perception can become a weapon, that the mind can dress destruction up as certainty and call it truth. The lyrics move through emotional and moral wreckage with a startling sense of elevation and impact: divine violence, private damage, the ugly glamour of collapse. There is no easy sorting of sinner and saint here, no polished moral vantage point from which to pass sentence. Instead, the song keeps returning to air as omen, as condition, as a medium where one might rise or plunge depending on forces barely under control.

Ria Aursjoen’s voice is central to the spell. She brings an ethereal sheen without softening its sense of danger. Her performance gives the song height, but also ache. Around her, the guitars open out in broad, sweeping arcs, rich with gothic grandeur, while the rhythm section keeps the song moving with a dark, deliberate insistence.

“Elements Of Air really exhibits my love for tension and release,” says guitarist Stephan Salit, who then sharpens the thought into a concise credo: “Dissonance and harmonic resolve. This one is pure alchemy.”

The song is personal, but also wider than that, alert to how private grievance can swell into a worldview, and how that worldview can collapse into wreckage. “(It’s) about how we see the world, our chosen frame of reference, and how much power that holds over us — including the power to destroy things we value,”  Aursjoen explains. “The direct inspiration was someone I knew who chose to view the world through a lens of hate, and how that ultimately cost the friendship.”

The video extends these ideas with striking elegance. Shot in black and white and framed like a silent film, complete with title cards, it sends the band drifting through a cemetery as though they have wandered into a séance staged by German Expressionists after midnight and then left to develop in some psychedelic darkroom. Aursjoen, crowned in her signature black flowers, looks both ceremonial and severe, a figure from another century carrying modern disquiet in her gaze. There is a tactile conviction to the imagery, because the band has taken pride in keeping generative AI out of the process. The result feels physical, intentional, and alive to chance.

“We wanted the visuals to mirror the feeling of the song — that sense of how we see the world,” says drummer Randy Gzebb, adding they searched for a location with a “raw, elemental quality” and the value of spontaneity once David Kruschke’s camera was rolling.

Formed in San Francisco in 2022, Octavian Winters continues to make a persuasive case for themselves as one of the more compelling groups in contemporary gothic music. Elements of Air feels like a threshold moment: severe, sumptuous, and emotionally charged, with one foot in classic deathrock and the other stepping toward something larger, stranger, and more exalted. It leaves you with the sense that Octavian Winters are building momentum and myth, one gust at a time.
