A faint voice, in Samuel Beckett’s Company, calls from the edge and urges the body toward the plunge. Brave Boy takes their name from that suspended instant, and on A Faint Voice at Loudest, the Wichita duo of Mary Harrison and Eric Harrison treat the pop song as a similar precipice: a place where desire, dread, memory, and self-recognition gather before the fall.

The record began, by their account, as a “10 songs in 10 days” exercise, a private discipline against hesitation, sounding like a suite of sleek, strange rooms, each one lit by DX7 glass, LinnDrum snap, saturated bass, and guitars. Brave Boy may move within the weather systems of post-punk, dream pop, synthpop, and the softer outskirts of sophisti-pop, but their best moments come from the pressure placed between those languages. The guitars carry Johnny Marr-like filigree, the rhythms recall the disciplined body music of 1980s R&B and electro-boogie, and the synths suggest a world where Cocteau Twins, The Blue Nile, New Order, Prince, Choir Boy, and Jam & Lewis productions all share a midnight-train platform.

At the centre is Mary Harrison’s voice, a dramatic instrument with glam edges and a theatrical reach that never collapses into camp. She sings as though the room is both stage and confession booth, pushing Brave Boy’s songs toward emotional theatre without losing their pop intelligence. Eric Harrison’s production surrounds her with movement rather than murk: chorused guitars, bright mallet tones, and basslines that keep the album’s feet on the floor even when its eyes are fixed somewhere above the ceiling.

There is a pleasing contradiction in the phrase Eric uses for the record, “hidden haze under the funk.” It explains much of A Faint Voice at Loudest. These songs seep upward through the grooves in a peculiar charge: intimacy trying to speak through distance, romance distorted by expectation, gender and identity viewed through a cracked mirror.

The brightest passages bubble and burst with almost garden-like light. One can picture fireflies, lanterns, and a twilight game of pursuit, yet beneath that delicate surface the music keeps pressing forward with urgent physicality. Mary’s voice holds firm inside the glow, tender and commanding, while Eric’s guitars and synths flare, vanish, and return in altered shapes. Vulnerability can have a backbeat, and that the faintest voice sometimes travels furthest when the body is already moving.

“We started this album almost accidentally,” the band reflects. “It began as a challenge to write quickly and stop overthinking everything, but somewhere in the process it became the most honest thing we’ve ever made. A lot of the record deals with emotional distance, identity, memory, and trying to connect through noise. Sonically, we wanted it to feel dreamy and atmospheric, but still move physically. There’s a lot more funk and R&B underneath it than people probably expect.”

On I Saw You There, the room is already dead before desire arrives: another party, another drink, another little social defeat, until one figure cuts through the fog and turns vacancy into fixation. Walk Away answers that rush with rupture, taking the language of obedience, rules, and romantic exhaustion and twisting it into escape; the command becomes a door, and heartbreak becomes the hand that opens it.

Oh Me, Oh Life moves through loneliness, failed speech, and the bruised search for meaning before finding a thin but stubborn thread of renewal in love and connection. Drifting sinks deeper into the body’s private undertow, where anxiety, memory, and emotional depletion pull the speaker from the present, leaving another person’s touch as the last rope back to shore.

On Take Back the Nite, devotion curdles into desperation as a lover tries to drag someone back from addiction, absence, and self-erasure through intimacy, need, and sheer force of feeling. With You turns romance into a locked room of recursive arguments and blurred selves, where both parties know the bond is bad for them and still cannot quite cut the cord.

Feels So Real treats transformation not as triumph but as tremor: the old self breaking open, the new one uncertain, and love left to answer whether it can survive the change. Be a Brave Boy closes on a more brutal inheritance, tracing how childhood shame, parental command, and forced courage can become an inner voice that follows a person into adulthood, still speaking, still wounding.

Walk alone, reflections in glass

Head down, feel the glare staring back

It sees, receives and it leads

I’ve got angels watching over me 

Neo Dimes’ Alone arrives with its teeth bared and its heart sealed inside a panic room. Stephen Edmunds, the Denver musician behind the project, has made a debut full-length steeped in industrial rock, dark synth tension, and bruised private terror: the dread machinery of Nine Inch Nails, the devotional grandeur of Songs of Faith and Devotion-era Depeche Mode, the narcotic pressure of Massive Attack, and the dread of a man confronting fatherhood as the public world grows meaner, colder, and more automated.

Alone studies addiction, technology, ideology, romance, grief, and memory as interlocking systems of control. These songs describe a life under constant surveillance: trained, tempted, sorted, sold, and finally abandoned. The album’s deepest fear, however, is older than any device or algorithm: it is the terror of being left alone inside your own head, reaching outward, and finding no hand reaching back.

Beasts retreats from the judging outside world into a hidden interior where alienation hardens into appetite. Hope collapses into instinct, and the self becomes something fed by its own exile. Angels is sharper still, recasting guardianship as surveillance. Glass, screens, and invisible networks replace divine protection, turning guidance into control and attention into captivity. The song understands how modern life sells convenience while quietly narrowing the room. God’s Perfect Meme savages hypocrisy, grift, and cultural exhaustion, where lies become performance and everyone is too numb or compromised to challenge them. The song glimpses escape, change, and grace slipping further out of reach.

Trigger turns alcohol into the spark that sets addiction, anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation in motion, but Edmunds locates the deeper wound with painful clarity: “Alcohol is the trigger that brings on all kinds of other issues (addiction, anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation), but all of that pales in comparison to how terrifying loneliness and both physical and emotional isolation is to me,” he admits. The song moves through shame, self-sabotage, and the brutal mercy of truth, where revelation can only offer deliverance after it has cut through every lie once used for survival.

Directed by Ty Borkowski, the video extends that private terror into the public realm, tracing the impact of mass media through the image of an authoritarian figure commanding the masses from the glow of broadcast television. It channels an Orwellian nightmare in which isolation is exploited, fear becomes programming, and control arrives disguised as communication.

Don’t Think pushes that fear into the public square, attacking groupthink, propaganda, and apocalyptic obedience. Authority twists language until lies feel liberating and cruelty starts passing for clarity. Edmunds hears the machinery that pulls disillusioned people toward extremism: give them grievance, give them enemies, give them a script, then call surrender awakening.

The political charge grows from a personal crisis. “I recently lost a career right as my daughter came into…a world where she has fewer rights than her mother did and where tyranny is creeping into every facet of life,” Edmunds reflects. “We’re addicted to the technology in our pockets that opens us to the world by consuming us entirely. It’s omnipresent and inescapable, and I’m pissed off.”

Obsidian confronts guilt, false purity, and the ruin left by deception, while One Thing turns betrayal into sleepless obsession, where freedom depends on an answer that may never arrive. How To Love lowers its guard, pleading for patience, trust, and the chance to repair what fear has damaged. It Comes and Goes sits with grief as a recurring force, carrying regret, drinking, spiritual exhaustion, and the stubborn will to move forward anyway. Ending with Dear Ghosts, the album reaches toward renewal through wreckage, finding no easy absolution, only the hard work of staying alive when the ghosts keep calling.

Even the release strategy comes with a raised fist. Physical copies of Alone arrive on vinyl and cassette a month before the digital version, a pointed act against the scroll-and-discard economy that turns songs into passing data. “The single covers convey the album’s story, with each song’s cover serving as a chapter and visual representation of paranoia, persuasion, control, and acceptance that fuse together to form the final album cover,” says Edmunds.

Edmunds is blunt about the intent: “The album concept and the release itself is a fuck you to the tech overlords and the world they have foisted on all of us.” That anger gives the album its charge, but the pain underneath gives it weight. All things considered, a strong debut from Neo Dimes.

Es ist mir immer wieder ein besonderes Vergnügen, VÖs von Ricardo Hoffmann zu besprechen. Mit „The Tree of Knowledge“ veröffentlicht er nun bereits das fünfte Album von SALINE GRACE. Erneut gelingt es dabei, ein beeindruckendes, tief gefühlvolles Werk in die Hände der geneigten Hörerschaft zu legen.

Das Album beginnt gleich mit dem Titelsong, der gewohnt ruhig in die Gehörgänge dringt, dabei aber eine ganz besondere innere Energie beherbergt. Das folgende, wie mit Weichzeichner gemalte „Lethal Anaconda“ kommt leicht wellenförmig daher und liefert neben der Melancholie, dieses leicht Verträumte. „Raven Berta“ wird mehr erzählt als gesungen, was die ganze Geschichte ein wenig bedrohlicher erscheinen lässt. Ein wunderschöner, sehr gelungener Beginn. Drei Songs, wie gemalt für die Musik von SALINE GRACE. Man spürt förmlich das Elegante und auch die Herausforderung, die fein gezeichneten Gemälde zu interpretieren.

Die zweite Seite der Doppel LP beginnt mit dem bedrückenden Thema „Selbstjustiz“ (hier Eltern, die den Missbrauch und die Tötung ihres eigenen Kindes rächen). Langsamer Aufbau, verführerische Harmonie und ein elegant dahinfließender Sog aus feingliedrigen Saiten und harmonischen Tönen weist so gar nicht auf die abgründige Geschichte dahinter hin. Wie gut, dass es hernach mit dem schwungvollen Instrumental „Autumn Realms“ eine kleine Auflockerung gibt. Es folgt die aktuelle Singleauskopplung „Room to let“. Ein berührendes Stück, welches sich mit dem Phänomen der Einsamkeit trotz hoher Bevölkerungsdichte beschäftigt, bei der Menschen in Städten trotz ständiger Umgebung von anderen isoliert leben. Die musikalische Atmosphäre scheint eher eine ferne Einöde zu beschreiben. Geschickte Erhebungen in der Hookline und verspielte Schachtelungen sorgen für kleine Spannungsbögen.

„Grapes“ erklingt phasenweise etwas sperrig. Die Disharmonien verschlingen den abgründigen Text und packen dich mitten in der Unruhe. „Skagerrak“ ist ein dramatisch daherkommender Instrumentalsong, der mich ein wenig an Richard Strange erinnert. Der orientalische Touch verleiht dem Stück eine gewisse Fremde, während „Memories of Winter“ seltsam vertraut daherkommt. Die innewohnende Ruhe lässt tagträumerische Gedanken zu. Die zartschmelzende Ästhetik glänzt konträr zur vorherigen Erregung. Eine samtene Glättung, die auch durch die gefühlvolle Stimme eine gelungene Hegemonie erzeugt. Das dramatische Schlussepos „Weeping Wounds“ beschäftigt sich mit (ungelösten) Traumata des Lebens. Ein anmutiger, würdevoller Abschluss, der auch noch mal die Ambivalenz zwischen tragischer Poesie und dieser eindringlichen, sehr gefühlvollen Musik aufscheinen lässt.

Fazit: Rein textlich gesehen, dürfte es das düsterste Album von SALINE GRACE sein. Musikalisch scheint Ricardo sein Augenmerk diesmal nicht nur auf diese besondere, dem Hörgenuss dienende Melodielinie gelegt zu haben, sondern auch dem experimentellen dunklen Alternativ-Rock oder dem Dark Jazz eine Tür geöffnet zu haben. Dabei bleibt das Gesamtkonstrukt allerdings voller anekdotischer, kleiner Melodien, die den Hörer berühren, oder den Text unterstützend dem Gesamtbild eine Farbe geben. Neben einer bestimmenden Gitarre kommen auch Mandolinen, Bass, Klavier, Orgel und Jazz-Drums zum Einsatz. Die filigrane Verschmelzung dient dann als verführerischer Teppich für den emotionalen Bariton Ricardos. Fans von NICK CAVE oder AND ALSO THE TREES dürften viel Freude an dem Album haben. Physisch wird das Werk als Doppel LP veröffentlicht. (andreas)

Die Frage stellt sich mir, weil ich die letzten zwei Alben von IMPURE WILHELMINA zwar sehr liebe, sie aber textlich doch die ein oder andere Schwachstelle, das ein oder andere englischsprachige Klischee zu viel drin haben. Nicht weiter ein Problem eigentlich, ist doch auch die Musik der Schweizer emotional einfach komplett drüber – KATATONIA zu „Last Fair Deal Gone Down“-Zeiten dabei nicht unähnlich und trotz (oder gerade wegen?) des Melancholie-Holzhammers mindestens genau so wirkungsvoll; ja, ich gehe so weit zu behaupten, dass mein achtzehnjähriges Ich dazu ebenfalls „Tänze aus Ebenholz“ (ach du meine Güte) vollführen würde, so wie es das weiland eben zum KATATONIA-Klassiker getan hat…

Die neue von IMPURE WILHELMINA nun heißt „Le sanglot“ – „Das Schluchzen“ – und ach, nie hatte ein Album einen passenderen Titel. IMPURE WILHELMINA auf Französisch, das birgt die Chance (für Nicht-Frankophile), Musik und Sprache vor allem als Klang zu erleben. Und meine Güte, was haben sie sie genutzt! Wieder sind die Lieder unglaublich eindringlich, dynamisch und triefen nur so vor Weltschmerz: „Regarde la foule, regarde la vie!“, so viel Französisch kann ich dann doch, dass ich diesen verzweifelten Wahnsinnsrefrain („Abîme“) verstehe und fühle bis es wehtut. Genial.

Ja, dieses „Abîme“ ist für mich der Höhepunkt eines Albums, das musikalisch nahtlos an das 2019er Meisterwerk „Antidote“ anschließt – Gitarrenwände in Moll, schleppendes Schlagzeug, wehmütiger Gesang (diesmal im Ausdruck nochmal deutlich verbessert im Vergleich zu früher), schmachtende Soli – und kompositorisch etwas zwingender, unvermittelter ausgefallen ist: Gerade die ersten fünf Lieder spüre ich beim ersten Durchlauf bereits intensiv, kein großes Reinhören ist diesmal erforderlich.

Perfekt komponiertes Schluchzen und ein finsteres Experiment
Darin liegt aber dann auch eine Gefahr, nämlich die des relativ schnellen Abnutzens. IMPURE WILHELMINA umschiffen sie, indem ihre Melodien zwar simpel, aber perfekt komponiert sind und ihr musikalisches Fundament tatsächlich Metal ist. Zudem werden große Momente nicht über Gebühr strapaziert – der wunderschöne Refrain von „Abîme“ etwa wird nur einmal wiederholt, dann wandelt sich das Stück in einen Post-Metal/-Doom-Kracher und sorgt so dafür, dass man nicht zu sehr ins Schwelgen kommt, sondern immer wieder darauf zurückgeworfen wird, dass dieses Leben, diese Welt tatsächlich so furchtbar eingerichtet ist wie ein Blick ins Internet täglich vermittelt.

Dafür sorgt in der Mitte von „Le sanglot“ dann auch eine ganz besondere Kollaboration, die das Album sinnvoll in zwei Hälften teilt: „Train mort“ zeigt IMPURE WILHELMINA von ihrer finstersten Seite, mit großer Unterstützung von MÜTTERLEIN. Schon auf „Radiation“ und „Antidote“ gab es Ausflüge in den extremen Metal, aber die waren stets nur kurz gehalten; „Train mort“ ist nun ein anderes Kaliber, atmosphärisch ebenso sehr MÜTTERLEIN wie IMPURE WILHELMINA und der perfekte Kontrapunkt zu den drumherum drapierten vor Weltschmerz und Sehnsucht nur so triefenden Schmachtfetzen.

Nichtsdestotrotz bleibt es ein Experiment, und der Rest des Albums ist wirklich so dermaßen von Melodie und unmittelbarem Gefühl bestimmt, dass man sich fragen könnte, wie diese Band das seit Jahrzehnten immer wieder schafft. Aber was heißt hier „schafft“? Sie kann vermutlich einfach nicht anders, diese Sehnsucht muss raus, diese Emotionen wollen verarbeitet werden. Und wo KATATONIA seit vielen Jahren musikalisch kein Bein mehr an die Erde kriegen (in my humble opinion), hauen IMPURE WILHELMINA einfach schon wieder ein nahezu perfektes Emo-/Post-/Alternative-Metal-Album in Moll raus.

Eine gute Entscheidung
War die Entscheidung fürs Französische, vermutlich unter dem Eindruck des auf der 2023er EP „Dead Decades“ veröffentlichten Serge-Gainsbourg-Covers „La Javanaise“ getroffen, nun also richtig? Durchaus: Die Sprache sorgt für mehr emotionale Nähe und Distanz gleichermaßen und gibt der Band genau das, was sie brauchte, um in den Olymp der Melancholie-Musik aufzusteigen (bzw. zu bleiben, herrje, die Vorgänger sind ja nun ebenfalls Meisterwerke!). Ja, ich habe sogar den Eindruck, dass Sänger Michael Schindl dadurch nochmal an Selbstvertrauen gewonnen hat – mit „Demain j’abandonne“ traut er sich sogar ein Akustik-Stück zu und überzeugt auch dabei auf ganzer Linie – und das Stück sorgt für eine sinnvoll gesetzte Verschnaufpause vor dem letzten Song, der natürlich wieder purer Emo-Bombast ist.

Wenn du also dieses Jahr nur ein Album suchst, zu dem du melancholisch aus dem Fenster oder in die Gegend starren kannst, immer den Tränen nahe und vielleicht manchmal sogar darüber hinaus, dann schluchze mit dem Schluchzen; es lohnt sich.

Alles für die Klicks? Dass OUR MIRAGE im Sommer 2025 mit einem kurzen Live-Clip viral gingen, sei ihnen gegönnt. Dass man den inszenierten Gastauftritt per Beschriftung aber als spontane Einlage eines Zuschauers verkauft hat, ist im schlimmsten Fall schlicht manipulativ, im Mindesten jedoch unaufrichtig. Und damit sind wir bereits bei der Krux: Verglichen mit der bisherigen Diskografie der Alternative Rock / Metal-Band wirkt „Fractured Minds“ weniger authentisch denn berechnend.

Schon das einleitende „Bury Me“ biedert sich an allem an, was derzeit in der Szene höchst angesagt ist: Synthesizer und glitchende Vocals hat man kurzerhand bei WE CAME AS ROMANS entlehnt, sodann schieben sich ein paar Shouts in die zuckersüß angelegten Melodiebögen ein, die natürlich vor dem Finale mit einem reingeschusterten Break unterbrochen werden.

„Fractured Minds“ zielt von Anfang bis Ende auf Airplay ab
Gleichzeitig ersäuft Timo Bonner, der eigentlich über eine ausgesprochen angenehme Singstimme verfügt, in Postproduktion. Zwischen beständiger Stimmmodulation und Synth-Geklimper opfern OUR MIRAGE ihr eigenes Profil und damit das Gefühl, das die Band seinerzeit auszeichnete: „Fractured Minds“ ist ein gestriegeltes Album, das von Anfang bis Ende auf Airplay abzielt und diese Mission immerhin mit Bravour erfüllt.

„Cold Hearted“ und „Right Now“ sind Pop-Songs im Rock-Pelz, während „Fractured” dem catchy Refrain direkt Millennial-Whoops und biederen Sprechgesang in der Strophe hinzuaddiert. Eher mäßig gerappt wird außerdem in „The Chase“, bevor die Ballade „God Behind Your Eyes“ nicht nur textlich übertrieben dick aufträgt.

OUR MIRAGE fehlt es anno 2026 an Originalität
Das Ärgerliche an der Geschichte ist derweil, dass „Fractured Minds“ ja durchaus kompetent konzipiert ist: Die Tracks sind auf den Punkt komponiert, die Melodien finden ohne Umwege ins Ohr und kleinere Kniffe sichern die Spannungskurve. Nur fehlt es im Gegenzug an Originalität, an Inspiration. Irgendwo zwischen ANNISOKAY und WE CAME AS ROMANS blieb die Identität auf der Strecke, während nun das Kalkül am Steuer sitzt. Für die eigene Karriere ist dieser Schritt – ähnlich der inszenierten Narrative in den sozialen Medien – offenbar durchaus förderlich. Nur zu welchem Preis?

Im Juni wollten STATIC X für vier Konzerte nach Deutschland kommen, nun hat die Band die Tour abgesagt. Auf Instagram schreiben STATIC X:

 

Wegen erster gesundheitlicher Probleme sind wir gezwungen, unsere Konzerte 2026 abzusagen.
Die Situation ist leider nicht zu ändern und erfordert sofortiges Handeln.
Wir entschuldigen uns vielmals für die Unannehmlichkeiten und versprechen, 2027 größer, stärker und schneller auf die Bühne zurückzukehren.

Wir schätzen eure Liebe und Unterstützung sehr und freuen uns darauf, euch alle bald wiederzusehen!

Einen neuen Clip hatte die Band vor wenigen Tagen geteilt: Im Dezember 2025 veröffentlichte die Band eine Jubiläumsausgabe ihres Debüts „Wisconsin Death Trip“, jetzt haben STATIC X einen Visualizer für den Bonus-Track „Down“geteilt:

„Wir haben immer gewusst, dass es in den Archiven zu ‚Wisconsin Death Trip‘  noch ein paar Schätze gibt. Die Fotos von unserem damaligen Bandfotografen Exum zum Leben zu erwecken, fühlt sich an wie eine Zeitreise ins Jahr 1998. ‚Down‘ haben wir immer geliebt. Ihm neue Energie zu verleihen, ist unsere Art, Wayne, das Album und die Fans zu feiern, die diese Musik seit 25 Jahren am Leben erhalten haben.“
