JAHRESHIGHLIGHTS 2025
PAGAN ALTAR: Never Quite Dead

Comeback des Jahres, Pt. I ! Und mit „Never Quite Dead“ hätten PAGAN ALTER zehn Jahre noch dem Tod von Sänger Terry Jones kaum ein passenderen Albumtitel wählen können. Noch mit Material aus der Feder des verstorbenen Hauptsongwriters  bestückt, ist das erst sechste Album der 1978 aus der Taufe gehobenen, britischen Proto-Metal/Doomkäuzen (mit Terry Jones‘ zupfendem Sohnemann Alan als noch einzigem Gründungsmitglied) die Fortsetzung der unverwechselbaren Magie früherer Scheiben und gleichzeitig eine deutlich zartere und noch harmonischere Version des gewohnten PAGAN ALTER-Stoffes.Die Interpretation von Jones‘ Gesangslinien durch Brendan Radigan, Ex-Magic Circle und aktueller Sumerlands– und Savage Oath-Sänger, ist nah am Original, lässt aber sowohl im gefälligen ‚Saints And Sinners‘, im doomigen ‚Well Of Despair‘ und besonders in der verträumten-melancholischen Ballade ‚Kismet‘ genügend Raum für eigene Anteile. Dank auch einer warmen und organischen Produktion gibt‘s auf „Never Quite Dead“ ausschließlich überstarkes Material zu bestaunen. Meine Topscheibe des Jahres 2025!

CORONER: Dissonance Theory

Comeback des Jahres, Pt. II ! Woran vermutlich nur noch die Allerverwegensten geglaubt haben, ist 2025 tatsächlich eingetreten: CORONER haben eine neue Studioscheibe veröffentlicht! Sage und schreibe 32 Jahre nach „Grin“ gibt es frisches Material der Schweizer Progressive Thrasher, das fast durch die Bank weg für offene Münder bei metallverliebten Genießer gesorgt hat. Und es stellt sich die berechtigte Frage: Wie kann man über drei Dekaden (albumtechnisch) weg vom Fenster sein und dann ein dermaßen tightes, rhythmisch mitunter diffiziles, hammermäßig groovendes und zeitgemäßes Teil loslassen, das auch die eigene Diskographie widerspiegelt und obendrein das gesamte, qualitativ hochwertige Schaffen bis dato mit links in den Schatten stellt? „Dissonance Theory“ ist ein technisch überragendes, forderndes und trotz aller spielerischen Kapriolen flüssig inszeniertes Meisterwerk mit dystopischen Zügen.

IMHA TARIKAT: Confessing Darkness

Mit kompakteren, verspielteren und lineareren Zügen wird der auch auf „Confessing Darkness“ zum Zerbersten emotionsgeladene Black Metal IMHA TARIKATs behutsam weiterentwickelt. Ätherische Melodiebögen, postige Schattierungen und hochinteressante Wendungen, dazu einen Kerem Yilmaz alias Ruhsuz Cellât, der mit passioniert-wütenden Schmerzausbrüchen, qualvoller Inbrunst herausgeschrieenen, aber auch Mut machenden Zeilen (“Do not be afraid of darkness and its shades”) kennzeichnen des weiteren das bis dato vielschichtigste Werk, das IMHA TARIKAT  abgeliefert haben. Packend, fokussiert und voller Leidenschaft für die dunkle Materie – “Confessing Darkness” ist ein schwer auszuhaltender Seelenstrip einer der intensivsten und leidenschaftlichsten Combos unserer Zeit!

THRON: Vurias

Ich hab ja schon erwartet, dass nach dem überraschend düstermelodischen und progressiveren „Dust“ kein ultrabrutal-mörderischer, durchgeblasteter Death Metal von der neuen THRON-Scheibe zu erwarten ist. Mit dem, was auf „Vurias“ passiert, hätte ich trotzdem nie und nimmer gerechnet! Versiert, aber auch mit straighterem Songwriting bereichern die Black/Death Metaller ihren ohnehin schon nach vielen Seiten offenen Sound darüberhinaus mit Akustikgitarren, Hammondorgel und mit einigen Saxofonpassagen. Ausnahmeschlagzeuger J sorgt einmal mehr mit unverschämt leichtfüssigem und technisch überragenden Drumming für einen spannungsgeladenen Kontrast zum sinistren Furor. Ihre bislang stärkste und künstlerisch hochwertigste Scheibe!

PHANTOM SPELL: Heather & Hearth

Es kommt nicht häufig vor, dass ein einzelner Musiker in einem Jahr mit zwei verschiedenen Bands Topreleases am Start hat. Sänger und Gitarrist Kyle McNeill allerdings hat dieses Kunststück mit seinen hauptamtlichen Seven Sisters („Shadow Of A Fallen Star, Pt. 2) und mit seinem eigenem Baby PHANTOM SPELL geschafft! Letztere haben gegenüber den sieben Schwestern dabei ein klein wenig die Nase vorn. Ebenso hauchdünn übertrifft „Heather & Hearth“, auf dem Mr. McNeill erneut seine 70s Hardrock/Progrock-Liebelei ausleben darf, das nicht minder schlechte „Immortal‘s Requiem“ – einfach weil der britische Alleinschreiber auf seinem Erstling aufbauen und deren Trademarks aus verzaubernden Leadmelodien und warmherzigen Hammondorgel- und Keysklängen, garniert mit altenglisch-folkigem Unterton noch präziser herausarbeiten und verspielter darbringen kann. 2025 war nicht nur umzugsbedingt ein herausforderndes Jahr, sondern brachte auch noch andere Baustellen mit sich, an denen teils noch gearbeitet wird. Trotz allem konnte ich viele Dinge aufrecht erhalten, einige andere musssten leider – wie z.B. meine Beiträge auf vampster – zurückgeschraubt werden oder blieben auf der Strecke. Mein Ziel für 2026: wieder mehr Reviews für vampster zu schreiben als 2025. Weniger geht ja auch kaum… :-). Und dieser Jahresrückblick ist schon mal ein guter Anfang…

Die Melodic Black Metal-Band GALIBOT hat mit „Euch’Mau Noir bis“ ein neues Album angekündigt. Dabei handelt es sich um eine Neu-Aufnahme des 2024er-Debütalbums „Euch’mau Noir“ mit zwei zusätzlichen Tracks.

Die Neuauflage greife die Bildsprache des Nordens Frankreichs auf, eines Landes dunkler Legenden und menschlicher Tragödien. Sie zeigt Bergleute, die von den Gruben geprägt sind und Dörfer, die von Katastrophen gezeichnet sind.

„Euch’Mau Noir bis“ wurde von Julien Baquero im Minotaure Studio produziert und wird am 20. Februar 2026 via Les Acteurs de L’Ombre Productions erscheinen. Vorab gibt es zu „Les Nords“ ein Lyric-Video.

Die Doom / Heavy Rock-Band BLACK SABBITCH hat einen Labeldeal bei Ripple Music unterschrieben. Im Zuge dessen hat die BLACK SABBATH Tribute-Band mit „Unrest in the West“ ein Live-Album veröffentlicht.

„Jeden Abend auf Tour nehmen wir uns Zeit, um mit unseren Fans zu quatschen, und die häufigste Frage, die uns gestellt wird, lautet: ‚Wann werdet ihr ein Live-Album aufnehmen, das wir kaufen können? Als Ripple Music auf uns zukam, bestand das einzige Dilemma darin, was wir aufnehmen sollten. In 13 Jahren haben wir einen riesigen Katalog an Material, das wir spielen (genug für 8 Platten). Wir wollten eine spaßige, knallharte Platte machen, die sich wie unsere Liveshows anfühlt und sich nicht auf die gleiche alte Setlist stützt, die man von unzähligen anderen Bands hört“, sagt Drummerin Angie Scarpa.

„Unrest in the West“ ist am 7. November 2025 erschienen. Nach einem Live-Video zu „A National Acrobat“ gibt es mit „A Hard Road“ nun ein weiteres Live-Video als Vorgeschmack auf die anstehende Tour im April 2026.

Die finnische Hardcore-Band RATS WILL FEAST hat mit „An Evocation“ eine neue EP angekündigt. Die neue Scheibe folgt auf das vierte Album der Finnen „Hellhole“ (2024) nach und wird am 3. April 2026 via Time To Kill Records erscheinen.

Inhaltlich versuche „An Evocation“, eine Person zu beschreiben, die zwischen verschiedenen Ebenen der Akzeptanz und des Grolls hin- und hergerissen ist. Es ist eine Momentaufnahme eines Prozesses, der das Leben jedes Menschen berührt. Zwischen den Zeilen reflektiert der Text auch die Frage, was einen dazu bringt, immer wieder auf die Bühne zu gehen, und was das Schreiben und Aufführen dieser Art von Musik für einen selbst und andere so wichtig macht.

Aus Brasilien kommen OUTLAW und bringen uns mit ihrem melodischen Black Metal einen fulminanten Mix aus Härte und Melodie mit einem Schuss Epik. Das Album „Opus Mortis“ beinhaltet sieben Tracks, die eine durchweg gute Qualität bieten und den Hörer über nahezu die gesamte Zeit bei Laune halten können, wenn er melodischen Black Metal mag. Nachdem der Opener aus meiner Sicht nur „okay“ ist, zeigen die Südamerikaner mit „Through the Infinite Darkness“, was sie drauf haben. Kalt und schneidig in der Atmosphäre, aggressiv und melodisch bei der Gitarrenarbeit, der Song macht richtig Spaß zu hören. Wenn sie mal das Tempo etwas drosseln, wird’s ein klein wenig „beliebig“ im Sound, die Stärke von OUTLAW sind die schnellen Abschnitte. Und atmosphärisch können sie punkten.

„Opus Mortis“ ist insgesamt ein gutes Album geworden, dass Fans des melodischen Black Metals zufrieden stellt. Auch wenn man nicht viel neues für’s Genre hier entdecken mag, sondern eher traditionellere Pfade entdeckt, so haben OUTLAW dennoch ein über weite Strecken abwechslungsreiches Album erschaffen, das ihr euch anhören solltet. Empfehlungen sind Track 2 und 4. (eller)

Am 13. Februar 2026 erscheint das neue CONVERGE-Album „Love Is Not Enough“. „Love Is Not Enough“ ist das elfte Album der Band, es erscheint via Epitaph Records. Zur aktuellen Besetzung gehören Sänger und Texter Jacob Bannon, Gitarrist und Produzent Kurt Ballou, Bassist und Sänger Nate Newton sowie Drummer Ben Koller.

„Love Is Not Enough“ ist das elfte Album der Band, es erscheint via Epitaph Records. Zur aktuellen Besetzung gehören Sänger und Texter Jacob Bannon, Gitarrist und Produzent Kurt Ballou, Bassist und Sänger Nate Newton sowie Drummer Ben Koller.

Kurt Ballou hat „“Love Is Not Enough“ mit Unterstützung von Zach Weeks aufgenommen und gemischt, Jacob Bannon übernahm das Artwork und das Layout.

„Wir sehen diese Band nach wie vor als einen wichtigen Teil unseres Lebens“, sagt Bannon. „Wir geben alles, was wir haben. Wir haben mehr als die Hälfte unseres Lebens hinter uns,  deshalb schauen wir genauer als zuvor auf viele Dinge. Ich glaube nicht, dass nur wird das so machen. Ich finde, dass es moderner Musik, besondere aber unserem Genre, an Echtheit mangelt. Entweder sind die Songs so roh und fast chaotisch, dass es vom Westentlichen ablenkt, oder die Bands nehmen ihren Songs das Leben, indem sie jeden Aspekt bearbeiten. Manchmal hat der perfekte Take etwas Wildes in sich, er ist nicht perfekt ausgeführt. Auf diesem Album gibt es viele kraftvolle Momente und viele wütende Momente. Unsere Echtheit verstärkt das.“

‚Love Is Not Enough‘ ist anders als alle anderen CONVERGE-Alen – es steigert sich immer weiter. Das ist  beabsichtigt. Wir haben x-mal die Reihenfolge der Songs ausgetauscht, weil jeder Musik anders interpretiert und es keine richtige oder falsche Vorgehensweise gibt. Wir scherzen immer, dass wir alle gleichermaßen unzufrieden sein müssen. Aber diese Reihenfolge funktioniert.“

Ruhrgebiet, in den Siebzigerjahren: Mille Petrozza wächst als Sohn einer Malocherfamilie im Essener Stadtteil Altenessen auf. Die Mutter DDR-Geflüchtete, der Vater Gastarbeiter aus Kalabrien, er arbeitet unter Tage. Im multikulturellen Schmelztiegel des Potts treffen die Subkulturen der damaligen Zeit auf strukturellen Wandel: Zechensterben, Gewalt, Alkoholismus, Pattexschnüffeln. Am 3. April 2026 erscheint das neue Album von SUNN O))) via Sub Pop. Das selbstbetitelte Album „SUNN O)))“ wurde von der Band und Brad Wood im Januar 2025 in den Bear Creek Studios in Woodinville, Washington, aufgenommen, produziert und gemischt.

Reonhören kann man in die erste Single „Glory Black“:

Das Albumcover besteht aus zwei Gemälden des verstorbenen amerikanischen Künstlers Mark Rothko – eines auf der Vorderseite und eines auf der Rückseite, wobei das Kunstwerk für die britischen und europäischen Pressungen umgekehrt ist. Das CD- und LP-Paket enthält außerdem ausführliche Liner Notes des Autors Robert Macfarlane, dessen Roman „Is a River Alive?“ aus dem Jahr 2025 zu den Inspirationsquellen des Albums gehört. Illustrationen der französischen Künstlerin Elodie Lesourd sind auf den Innenhüllen der LP zu sehen.

Am 16. Januar 2026 veröffentlichen SOEN ihr neues Studioalbum „Reliance“ via Silver Lining Music. Mit einem Video zu  „Indifferent“ präsentieren die Schweden nun einen weiteren Song daraus, über den Track sagt die Band folgendes:

„In ‚Indifferent‘ geht es darum, wie Vertrauen in Leere übergeht. Der stille Schock, wenn man merkt, dass die Person, auf die man sich gestützt hat,  nicht mehr da ist“, erklärt Sänger und Frontmann Joel Ekelöf. „Spannung und Zurückhaltung simd in diesem Song lauter als Wut, begleitet wird es von einem Streichquartett. Beziehungen bergen Risiken, aber es lohnt sich, sie einzugehen“, fügt Schlagzeuger Martin Lopez hinzu.

 

Im Dezember stellten die Schweden den Song „Discordia“ mit einem Video vor:

„‚Mit Discordia‘ wollen wir neue Wege gehen“, erklärt Schlagzeuger Martin Lopez. „Wir haben mit dunkleren Stimmungen experimentiert, der Song soll den Übergang von Selbstschutz in die Isolation einfangen.“
„Der Song spielt mit der Spannung zwischen dem Wunsch nach Verbindung und dem Bau von beschützenden Mauern. Mit ihm trauen wir uns, auch die unbequemen Ecken unseres Sounds zu erkunden“, ergänzt Sänger Joel Ekelöf.

Im November stellten SOEN die zweite Single „Mercenary“ bei YouTube vor.

„‚Mercenary‘ handelt von der Gewalt, die unsinnewohnt und die Hass in unser Leben sickern lässt, was wiederum ganze Generationen prägt“, kommentiert Sänger und Frontmann Joel Ekelöf. „Es geht auch um Verrat und darum, wie dieser dazu führen kann, dass wir ‚Geier zu Königen krönen‘“, ergänzt Gründungsmitglied und Schlagzeuger Martin Lopez, „musikalisch beinhaltet der Song die Essenz von SOEN – heavy und doch melodisch, aufgebaut mit Kraft und Präzision.“

 

 

Als erste Single teilten die Schweden im September den Song „Primal“ – Drummer Martin Lopez sagt dazu:

„Primal“ beschreibt unsere Frustration über den Zustand unserer Welt. Korruption, Spaltung, und wir ersticken in Technologie. Der Song kommt direkt auf den Punkt, basiert auf Riffs und roher Energie, öffnet sich aber auch zu einem Refrain, der Hoffnung vermittelt.  Das erinnert daran,  dass das Licht immer noch die Dunkelheit durchbrechen kann.

„Reliance“ enstand in Zusammenarbeit Alexander Backlund im Fascination Street Studios, das Mastering ist von Tony Lindgren.

Schon im September 2025 sind SOEN wieder live zu sehen, die Band tourt mit  DARK TRANQUILLITY, EQUILIBRIUM und IOTUNN.

Die Epic Black Metal-Band SAILLE hat einen Labeldeal bei Non Serviam Records unterschrieben. Im Zuge dessen wird die aus Belgien stammenden, aber inzwischen in den Niederlanden beheimatete Band ihr neues Werk „Forebode“ veröffentlichen. Darauf sind vier neue Tracks, eine Neu-Aufnahme sowie eine Classical-Version eines Songs und drei Live-Aufnahmen zu finden.

From a distant balcony of time, we listen for signals and learn how rarely they arrive intact. Signals from a Distant Afterglow, from the upcoming album Points of Inaccessibility, reaches us the way ancient starlight reaches Earth – delayed by vast intervals, thinned by passage, altered by every medium it crosses. Rafael Anton Irisarri treats sound as astronomy treats light: as evidence rather than presence, as proof that something once burned, expanded, and sent its trace outward. What we hear is a transmission that has endured distance, loss, and distortion simply by existence.

The piece began its life inside the former Pieter Baan Centre in Utrecht, a structure built for containment and quiet. In such a place, silence carries mass. Bowed guitar tones accumulate with patience, stretching through corridors and sealed rooms, settling slowly as if obeying an unseen force. Each sustained note widens the sense of duration. Time elongates. Space listens.

Alongside this process, Dutch visual artist Jaco Schilp developed real-time point-cloud projections, driven by a continuous flow of audio data. Sound and image evolved together, responding as shifting fields of signal and interference. Forms appeared, dissolved, and reassembled, never fixed long enough to be possessed. Perception became provisional.

The material later moved to Irisarri’s New York studio, where reduction became an act of care. Vast improvisations were narrowed to essential coordinates. Selected passages were translated into MIDI, allowing restrained harmonic extensions to surface through Prophet-5 tones, Moog bass, and finely weighted strings. Editorial guidance from Abul Mogard clarified pacing and proportion, reinforcing a condition of suspended motion—forward movement without destination.

Karen Vogt’s voice enters as a distant transmission rather than an address. It travels through layers of delay and dispersion, softened by the medium that carries it. Meaning arrives incomplete, its contours blurred. The voice functions as evidence: a broadcast received late, altered by distance, yet unmistakably alive.

At the centre of Signals from a Distant Afterglow lies a meditation on persistence. Signals continue even after their sources recede. What remains is residue rather than clarity, an afterimage rather than contact. In this music, connection survives as trace, a faint but faithful record that something once reached outward, crossed immeasurable space, and was received.

Silence can sometimes yield to rare and unexpected musical renewal, the kind that arrives without pomp, as if it had been waiting in a coat pocket, warm from the body. This return carries history with it. Curtain stand at the center of the crush: a Parisian group shaped in the early 2000s, long threaded into France’s cold-music lineage. Their presence feels earned: their sound turns gothic and intense, delivered with ferocity—focused, spare, exacting—while dancers surge and sway as though drawn by a shared gravity.

Curtain’s past stretches back through releases that once fixed a moment, including No Flowers by Request, now twenty years on and newly restored in a deluxe reissue by MusikÖeye. Recent performances across France and Europe have set them alongside longtime peers (Martin Dupont, Corpus Delicti, Christian Death, Selofan, Kontravoid), reclaiming shared ground. In its severity and drive, the music brings to mind the hard-edged nocturne of Buzz Kull, the industrial tension associated with Qual, and the ritual pressure found in Dancing Plague; a lineage felt in the room, pressing close.

In the new video for “Fire”, filmed at Les Caves Saint-Sabin in Paris, the camera sinks into the underground venue where the air presses close and the night carries a rhythm of its own. The club reads as cavernous yet intimate, a cellar of sound and bodies where heat and motion blur the line between stage and floor. Red strobes rake the ceiling; faces dissolve into motion. No spectacle intrudes—the setting does the work. Sweat-dark walls draw nearer. The crowd packs in shoulder to shoulder, moving in abandon, as Curtain plays, until the room itself seems to inhale and exhale. It feels communal, almost ritualistic… a reminder that this music thrives where ceilings are low and the night stays dense.

While their recent album Between Us, released via Manic Depression Records, marked a powerful return after a long pause, “Fire” points firmly forward. The single is taken from Curtain’s forthcoming album, due in March/April, which is currently in production and mixed by Franck Amendola (Corpus Delicti). This next chapter builds on the momentum of Between Us while pushing deeper into the band’s physical, club-driven intensity—new material already sharpening its edge in real time.

I flee onto the streets, birds chirp in ease, as my heart beats.

The door flings open, words unspoken, I breathe:

This alley is mine. 

From the Netherlands arrives Bragolin, a project that treats motion as a principle rather than a flourish. Edwin van der Velde builds songs the way a physicist sketches trajectories: attention fixed on force, velocity, and the invisible pressures that bend a path. Post-punk tension and dark-wave control coexist in their sound with an almost scientific patience, each element set in relation to the next. The result feels alert, forward-leaning, and acutely aware of the space it occupies, as if every second has been measured before it is released.

I Run and Hide unfolds inside that framework: the track moves at a quickened pace, breath tight, steps close together, carrying the listener through streets and out into open land where familiarity erodes under stress. Ordinary locations lose their neutrality. Silence thickens. Time contracts. Each attempt at refuge collapses, and repetition becomes a law rather than a choice. The structure loops back on itself, mirroring the psychology of flight, where progress exists but resolution remains out of reach.

Every sound you hear in this track, amazingly, comes from layered Clavinets. The absence of guitars clears the field, leaving a wiry, insistent texture that presses forward with clipped resolve. There’s a lineage here that points toward the emotional restraint of Pink Turns Blue and the poised minimalism of early Human League, distilled into something lean and focused. The speed never turns reckless; it stays disciplined, calibrated, and exact, reinforcing the sense of pursuit rather than overpowering it.

Lyrically, the song inhabits a cycle of escape that never widens into freedom. Running becomes routine; hiding becomes habit, fear stops being a spike and settles into rhythm. The repetition is structural, mirroring how panic reorganizes thought. The listener is pulled into that loop, asked to inhabit its logic rather than observe it from a distance.

The accompanying video, directed by Maria Gaedcke, extends this logic into the visual realm. A woman exits a house at dusk dressed in a white nightgown, immediately exposed against the deepening light. Her movement through empty streets feels urgent yet disoriented, the image fractured by lagging frames and soft focus. As the setting shifts to a cornfield, the environment grows more abstract, less anchored to place. The camera hovers between watcher and follower, collapsing the distance between observer and threat. The effect recalls classic horror pursuits, where the terror lies less in what is seen than in what is implied, and where motion itself becomes the primary language.

This sense of shared perspective is crucial. The viewer is never granted a position of safety. Instead, the framing insists on proximity, aligning perception with acceleration, breath, and imbalance. The chase is continuous, unresolved, and stripped of spectacle, allowing unease to accumulate through duration rather than surprise.

Bragolin’s path to this moment has been deliberate. Since their 2018 debut I Saw Nothing Good So I Left, the project has grown into a recognised presence within gothic circles across the globe. That history matters here, because I Run and Hide feels informed by distance traveled and ground covered, by nights spent refining restraint rather than excess.

Now, the track opens the door to Bragolin’s third full-length, I Don’t Like What It Does To Me, a release planned in stages across 2026. The album’s slow reveal mirrors the music’s own attention to pacing and consequence. This chapter will culminate in a release show at De Helling in Utrecht on April 2, a fitting setting for a project that understands space, pressure, and the quiet gravity that keeps bodies and ideas in motion.

2025 felt like a century—yet it slipped away in a heartbeat. And when I try to retrace it month by month, it doesn’t play back like a neat timeline so much as a trail of vignettes, an oasis of music experiences amongst the desolation of each surreal news cycle. If you compare year-end lists across different sites, the overlap is thinner than usual—and I don’t think that’s a sign of fragmentation so much as abundance. There were simply too many releases worth defending, too many albums that demanded a second pass, then a third, then the kind of listening where you stop “reviewing” and start living inside them. In so many ways, it still feels like we’re in a golden age for the music we champion here.

Amidst all of that, I did have one certainty: my album of the year came from a place I never expected. If you had asked me five years ago whether AFI would land at the very top of my list—let alone that we’d be featuring them here—I would’ve said no without hesitation. Yes, there were tells: the post-punk pull of 2021’s Bodies, the darker contouring going back to 2013’s Burial. But Silver Bleeds the Black Sun isn’t a flirtation with the lineage—it’s a full-bodied commitment. It sounds like a band who spent their lives alone in the same darkened room as Bauhaus, Killing Joke, The Cure, and The Sisters of Mercy, absorbing the grammar, the tension, the romance, the bite—and then writing something with a spirit that shares a greenroom with its Goth forebears.

Maybe I shouldn’t have been surprised. I’ve stood next to Davey Havok at more than a few shows over the years—watching stalwarts like The Mission and The Chameleons, and then catching newer artists too, the same kind of names he’s been calling out lately in interviews. That context makes Silver Bleeds the Black Sun hit even harder: it feels like a record made by lifelong fans—who understand exactly where this music came from and who still have the nerve to make it feel dark, dangerous, and danceable.



I had another moment like that halfway across the world. I was in a record store in Tokyo when Suede’s Antidepressants stopped me in my tracks—one of those “rewind it, play it again” encounters where the room briefly disappears. Suede have been on a consistently strong run since 2013’s Bloodsports (with 2016’s Night Thoughts still towering for me), and Antidepressants felt like that rare thing: a band with nothing to prove still finding new angles to sound urgent.

Besides the many phenomenal releases on my list—including Bootblacks, Lebanon Hanover, Lathe of Heaven, and Silver Tears—I also want to take a moment to spotlight a few newer artists I’d strongly recommend, projects that feel genuinely forward-moving rather than content to circle familiar ground. Tiffadelic immediately stood out to me for their soulful vocals—often ghostly in tone—layered over icy synth sounds that feel unearthed rather than assembled, echoing coldwave and darkwave currents from France and Germany in the ’80s through the 2000s. It’s as goth as it gets, but without affectation: the real thing, rooted in atmosphere and emotional gravity. Moon 17—who were first introduced to me by Spike Hellis—create old-school industrial music that is complex and operates in a space that actively defies standard EBM tropes. Their music carries the same sense of experimentation and risk that defined the Wax Trax era, but without the camo-and-crew-cut baggage that calcified the genre through the ’90s and 2000s. Some tracks unfold with strikingly beautiful vocals, others erupt into screams, and the tension between those extremes is exactly what makes the project so compelling. And finally, a mea culpa: we missed the mark this year by overlooking The Sick Man of Europe. Their self-titled album—particularly the track and single “Obsolete”—lands with sharp, nervy precision that recalls peak Colin Newman–era Wire: taut, intelligent, and mesmerizing.

There were plenty of other releases I wanted to squeeze in, and a few that deserve their flowers even if they didn’t make it into my top list. The Chameleons’ Arctic Moon earns an honourable mention, as well as Pink Turns Blue’s Black Swan, and Corpus Delicti’s Liminal, also stayed in heavy rotation for me, each in their own way reminding me why this strain of music keeps surviving every trend cycle. And Jim E. Brown’s I Urinated on a Butterfly was one of the year’s strangest pleasures— hilarious, satirical, self-effacing, and impossible to forget once it gets its hooks in. I also want to nod to Frank’s picks—especially The Horrors and Martin Dupont, and a few more that were just shy of being in my top 25,

My favorite EP this year was, by far, the bold early ’90s dance-pop diversion, the Trouble EP by Nuovo Testamento, followed by Automelodi’s Chanson-synth gem, the Cavallo EP. And the Australian duo Sacred Hearts released my favorite single of the year with “Possession”. But as far as synth-pop goes, Madeline Goldstein and Ronnie Stone released, hands down, two of the best tracks of the year, with “My Own Design” and “BOUND 2 THE RHYTHM”.

Honorable mentions on the singles front: Death Bells had two great ones, including “Shiver.” And the new tracks featured on Ductape’s Echo Drama Deluxe were fantastic, as well as the latest singles released in advance of their next album, Faded Flowers. And while David Byrne’s Who Is This Sky? Wasn’t my favourite of his solo work, but “T-Shirt”—with long-time collaborator Brian Eno—hit with all the kind of sly, minimalist synth brilliance that could hope for.

One last housekeeping note: there’s no Andi Harriman list this year, as she’s been buried in authoring a book that’s due out soon. We’ll be shouting about it properly when the time comes. For now, here’s my list—one attempt to pin down a year full of great music that flourished while society collapsed.

Since its launch in 2022, Dresden’s Cold-Hearted Festival has rapidly evolved into a cornerstone of the European darkwave scene, selling out year after year and steadily expanding its reach. Returning in 2026, the festival once again solidifies its reputation as one of Europe’s premier gatherings for darkwave, coldwave, and post-punk devotees. This year, Cold Hearted Festival takes place on November 13th at Hamburg’s Markthalle, followed by November 14th at Dresden’s Alter Schlachthof.

Collectively, the bands on the bill span the full spectrum of darkwave, post-punk, and coldwave, from stark minimalism and synth-driven severity to guitar-led gothic urgency. Each act brings a distinct voice to the lineup, reinforcing Cold-Hearted Festival’s commitment to showcasing the breadth and vitality of the contemporary dark underground. It’s not just one of the coolest festivals in Europe…it’s ice-cold.

Leading the 2026 edition is Cold Cave, whose emotionally charged synth-pop and post-punk lineage has left a lasting mark on the modern darkwave canon. They’re joined by an international lineup including Kaelan Mikla, Gvllow, Ash Code, Qual, Haunt Me, Night In Athens, Darkways, Vioflesh, Skelesys, and Huir – a bill that reflects both the genre’s legacy and its restless forward momentum.

Cold Cave

Founded by Wesley Eisold, Cold Cave occupy a tense, singular space where synth-pop, post-punk, and darkwave converge under pressure rather than nostalgia. Stark electronics serve as emotional architecture, framing lyrics that oscillate between confession and confrontation. Drawing from industrial minimalism and romantic new wave in equal measure, their songs feel both inward-facing and immense. Renowned for live performances that favour release over spectacle, Cold Cave remain a vital, unflinching presence within the modern dark underground.

Kaelan Mikla

Icelandic trio Kaelan Mikla channel coldwave severity into something ritualistic and charged, where glacial synth lines, insistent bass, and incantatory vocals converge. Sung primarily in Icelandic, the music carries a stark, elemental weight: rooted in place yet unbound by it, earning the band a devoted following far beyond their homeland.

It’s music that unfolds in half-light, sustained by mood and momentum.

Darkways

Spanish act Darkways works within coldwave and post-punk traditions while refining them through a contemporary electronic lens. Melody is never allowed to soften the blow; severity is held in careful balance with propulsion. The result is music that remains dark yet resolutely danceable, its melancholic pull sharpened by precision, rather than excess.
