San Francisco’s AURSJOEN channels her Nordic roots in new ‘Apollo’ single.
Debut ‘Strand’ EP, produced by goth legend William Faith, is out now!

San Francisco-based ethereal artist AURSJOEN presents ‘Apollo’, the third single from her sensual and mystical debut ‘Strand’ EP, released via Stratis Capta Records and produced, recorded, mixed and mastered by William Faith (The Bellwether Syndicate, Faith and the Muse, Mephisto Waltz, Christian Death) at 13 Studio in Chicago.

AURSJOEN is the project of Ria Aursjoen, who is vocalist and keyboardist for critically acclaimed post-punk outfit Octavian Winters, whose 2023 debut EP ‘The Line or Curve’ was followed by 2024’s double A-side single ‘Nebula / Velveteen’ with electronic legend Mark Pistel (Meat Beat Manifesto, Consolidated). A classically-trained singer and multi-instrumentalist, her musical past is steeped in genres ranging from Celtic and Nordic folk to darkwave and progressive metal.

Written by Aursjoen 10 years ago, ‘Apollo’ features a guest performance by Stephan Bryan Salit of Octavian Winters on guitar. As with the previous two singles – the ever-haunting ‘For Want Of’ and her ethereal debut ‘Nytår’ – the new video is the work of filmmaker David Kruschke, showcasing his masterful capture of light and colour. 

“Apollo” was written a few years ago and the idea was inspired by Dave Wyndorf (Monster Magnet). I always found Dave’s use of his voice absolutely masterful, with phrasing fit perfectly to the lyrics, and with this sort of dangerous edge to it. An incredibly evocative voice, with a sort of dark shamanic power. It started me thinking about the voice as a weapon, from everyday life and how we can so deeply cut into people, to magickal practices, summonings, rituals and so forth,” says Ria Aursjoen.

“David Kruschke and I played with the idea of a sort of summoning, or perhaps a sort of ecstatic possession… in it, I discover a mask that seems to be a gateway to – or for – something. Apollo is the god of music and poetry, of course, but also the god of prophecy and that altered oracular state.”

These ideas all relate to this collection of work as AURSJOEN, which heralds Ria Aursjoen’s emergence in a new direction, without leaving behind her ongoing work with Octavian Winters. Lush, layered and sweepingly cinematic, this dynamic slice of ethereal gothica is dark and light in equal measure. While Aursjoen’s voice and composition are distinctly recognizable and unique, the performances and sweeping arrangements somewhat recall Faith’s work with Faith and the Muse.

“This record is very special for me, as this is the first time I have had free creative rein to release work that is entirely my own. I have always enjoyed collaborating with other musicians, but I had built up a huge amount of my own material that had nowhere to go. It’s very exciting and fulfilling for me to bring all that together into one package. The listening arc of this EP represents many different times of life for me. William Faith and I have woven everything together with a recognizable sound that has continuity as well as variety.,” says Ria Aursjoen. 

“What I really love is to create music that is more than the sum of its parts, where the interplay (either harmonically or rhythmically) between different motifs gives birth to something extra, something “meta” that you can’t predict or engineer. I think those two states of feeling did that in my life too… a different self,  a new era was born for me out of that ice and fire.”

As someone who has synesthesia, Aursjoen experiences sound as visual structures, colours and textures. As a child, she wrote her musical ideas down in a unique system of notation she created, based around her visual perceptions of music. A published writer and visual artist, Aursjoen also won two national art competitions by eight and illustrated a children’s book. She creates much of Octavian Winters’ artwork and currently works with inks and parchment velum to create palimpsest-style art.

Phillip Boa hat gerade irgendwie einen Lauf, denn die Hallen seiner Konzerte sind seit Jahren wieder voll bis ausverkauft. Aber ist es nun Angst vor der eigene Courage oder ein clever Marketingschachzug, dass seit 2018 neues Material nur im Verbund mit der erneuten Wiederaufarbeitung seiner Diskografie erscheint? Im Grunde ging dieses Prozedere ja schon 2016 los, wo es 12 neue Songs nur im Zusammenhang mit seiner Best Of „Blank Expression“ gab. Ebenso bei der Neuauflage von „Boaphenia“, wo dem Erfolgsalbum von 1993 mit „The Porcelain Files“ ein weiteres in dessen Geiste mit 10 extra dafür aufgenommenen Tracks gab. Weiter ging es im vorigen Jahr mit der Re-Edition von „Copperfield“, welcher 5 ganz frische Songs beigefügt wurden und jetzt gibt es bei „Hair“ wieder das volle Programm bzw. wurde mit „The Honeymoon Files“ ein ganzes Album mit 10 neuen Songs zur Seite gestellt. Und diese „The Honeymoon Files“ haben es es wirklich in sich und locker das Zeug dazu, als eigenständiges Album von PHILLIP BOA & THE VOODOOCLUB veröffentlicht zu werden! Diese 10 Titel sind die mit Abstand eingängigen, entspannten und lässigsten Songs vom Meister seit langem, denen der Geist von „Hair“ innewohnt und es auch textlich reichlich Reminiszenzen an 1989 gibt, aber die trotzdem absolut auf der Höhe der Zeit sind! Sehr originell finde ich hier im Boa-Kontext die latente Offbeat- und Reggae-Rhythmik, wie den diesmal sehr dezenten und dadurch umso wirkungsvollen Einsatz des typischen unschuldigen Frauengesangs. Hier reiht sich Hit an Hit, welche recht unterschwellig unspektakulär daher kommen, jedoch nach einigen Durchläufen richtig zünden und nicht mehr aus dem Ohr gehen. Dagegen verblasst meiner Meinung nach fast schon das legendäre eigentliche Werk „Hair“, welches für diesen Anlass neu von Eroc überarbeitet und remastert wurde, der ja auch schon bei der Re-Mastered-Edition von 2006 Hand angelegt hatte. Natürlich sind so oder so „Container Love“, „Fine Art In Silber“ oder „Annie Flies The Lovebomber“ seit dem unkaputtbare Klassiker der deutschen Indie-Szene und selbst heute noch über jeden Verdacht erhaben. Diese und auch das ganze Album lohnt sich immer wieder, neu entdeckt und im Spiegel der Zeit bewertet zu werden. Neben der normalen Doppel-LP & -CD ist insbesondere die Deluxe-Ausgabe im großformatigen Hardbook-Cover interessant, die 4 CDs, eine Vinyl-10“, ein Booklet und einen signierten Druck enthält. Neben der Re-Edition von „Hair“ und „The Honeymoon Files“ gibt es hier erstmals das komplette Konzert von PHILLIP BOA & THE VOODOOCLUB in Ostberlin zu hören, welches damals kurz vor dem Mauerfall in der Werner Seelenbinder-Halle statt fand und um das sich einige Mythen & Legenden ranken. Des weiteren bietet die vierte CD weitere Live-Tracks, Demos, Mixe und die damaligen Bonus-Songs der Singles und limitierten Ausgabe des Original-Albums. Die zusätzliche 10“ enthält auf der A-Seite einen weiteren neuen Song, wie einen anderen Mix von „Nero Nero“ und auf der B-Seite drei Live-Hits vom „Hair“-Album. Viel Material, welches auf Grund der hochwertigen Aufmachung auch seinen Preis hat, jedoch dafür jeder Cent gerechtfertigt ist! Ein wirklich rundherum fettes Gesamtpaket und „The Honeymoon Files“ losgelöst für mich eines der Alben des Jahres! (Marco Fiebag)

„Strange Kind of Paradise“, das kommende und letzte Album der Post Punk Band RED LORRY YELLOW LORRY, wird im Juli offiziell auf COP International veröffentlicht. „Strange Kind of Paradise“ war fast zwei Jahrzehnte in der Mache. Viele Fans hatten schon lange die Hoffnung aufgegeben, dass es jemals das Licht der Welt erblicken würde – doch nun ist es da, das letzte Album, das das geschichtsträchtige Werk von RED LORRY YELLOW LORRY abrundet.

Das Album stemmt sich gegen das Chaos des modernen Lebens und ringt mit Themen wie Desillusionierung, Überleben und flüchtiger Transzendenz. Cristina Rombi ist Of The Muses, stammt aus Italien und Freunde alter The Gathering, dem wavigen Pop der 90s und generell dem leicht metallisch angehauchten Goth/Wave, der auch mit Shoegaze und Alternative flirtet, sei diese schöngeistige Platte nur wärmstens ans Herz gelegt. Mit wunderschön sehnsüchtigen Vocals ist man nicht weit von Bands wie This Ascension entfernt, die orchestralen Synths, alles angenehm verwaschen produziert, tun ihr übriges, um im nebligen Szenario einen kleinen Moment der Weltenflucht geniessen zu dürfen. ‚A Summer Burial‘ flirtet mit melancholischen Synths und orchestraler Schönheit schon mal richtig gut mit der Pathos-Keule. 90s Goth/Athmospheric-Metal mit einfach nur sehnsuchtsvoll aufgeladenen Harmonien, die eher Wave statt Metal sind. Vielleicht erinnerst Du dich an die liebliche Anneke von The Gathering, die gerade auf den ersten Gehversuchen immer dieses Mädchenhaft einnehmende in den Vocals hatte, also Melancholie und Glückseligkeit in einem Tune verspeiste, dann kommst Du dem Sound-Gefühl der Italienerin schon gut nah. Viele flächige Synths, doomige Parts und der immer wieder orchestrale Teppich mit eher hintergründigen Riffs lässt die Anmut in den Vocals zum Hauptakteur werden und das metallische bleibt eher hintergründiges Fundament. ‚Spirits Interlude‘ ist minimal, schwebt im feinsten Netz aus ätherischen Wave/Goth und Pop, atmet die Wehmut der guten alten 90s Female Wave Releases, all den nostalgisch schönen Heavenly Voices Spirit, der letztlich wohl unerreicht bleibt. Of The Muses wissen all diese Fragmente gut ins Hier und Jetzt zu transferieren, wirken beseelt wie in ‚Pilgrimage‘, welches schwebt, rockt und abhebt. Piano, viele akustische Elemente, romantisch aufgeladene Melodien und dieses gewisse Etwas treffen den Nerv jedes Nostalgikers, versprochen! ‚The In-Between Was A Fever Dream‘ ist ein wundervoll entrücktes Stück mit perlenden Akkorden, shoegazigen Alternative/Dream Pop Einflüssen, welches driftet und sehnt und einfach nach einer liebevolleren Welt klingt als die da draußen. Dynamisch sind die Steigerungskurven innerhalb des Tracks, kennt noch jemand die Amerikaner von Brave bzw. Arise From Throns, die auch immer diese tolle Mixtur aus wavig leichten Metal spielten, mit folkigen Einflüssen und immer schönen weiblichen Vocals. Wenn du also mit meinen Referenzen der guten alten 90s was anfangen kannst, lieblichen Frauengesang magst und generell romantischem Wave offen gegenüber stehst, dann bitte check diese Italiener.

Egal, was man heutzutage von CREMATORY (oder auch von der Kategorie Gothic Metal) hält, erstmal sprechen die Zahlen ihrer Karriere eine beeindruckende Sprache. CREMATORY haben in 34 Jahren 17 Alben veröffentlicht, von denen 14 in die deutschen Charts eingestiegen sind, und zuletzt haben sie sogar die Top 20 geknackt. Ich bin seit ihrem 2. Album „…Just Dreaming“ (1994) mit an Board und auf jedes neue Album neugierig, auch wenn mir nicht jedes vollends gefallen hat.

Die 12 Tracks von „Destination“ sind quasi ein Querschnitt der Musik der Gothic Metal Pionieren aus den über 30 Jahren ihres Bestehens geworden, das aber viele moderne Elemente parat hat. Dia Band schlägt keinen neuen Stil ein, hat sich an der ein oder anderen Stelle ein bisschen neu ausgerichtet, auf ihre Stärken besonnen und den Kitsch, der manchen alten Stücken anhaftet, weggelassen.

Fans werden den Albumtitel, den es vorab zu hören gab, bereits gefeiert haben. CREMATORY klangen selten so heavy und präsent mit ihrem Musikstil. Das etwas ruhiger sich aufbauende „The Future Is A Lonely“ entpuppt sich auf den zweiten Blick als eine mächtige Düster-Hymne, während „Welt aus Glas“ die elektronische Facette in den Mittelpunkt stellt. Das waren die ersten drei Songs, an denen es nichts zu meckern gibt. Wer CREMATORY mag, wird bis hierhin bestens bedient, alle anderen haben sowie nicht soweit in das Album reingehört.

Wo sie herkommen, wo wir alten Gothic Metal Säcke alle herkommen, zeigen CREMATORY mit dem an 4. Position gesetzten Coverstück „My Girlfriend’s Girlfriend“. Der TYPE O NEGATIVE Song stammt aus der Hochzeit des Gothic Metals Mitte der 90er und wird präsentiert von Gastsänger Michelle Darkness von END OF GREEN, der zum einen die passendste Stimme für diesen Track hat und für den es auch nicht das erste TON Cover ist. Ansonsten übernimmt wie auf dem Vorgängeralbum „Inglorious Darkness“ Frontmann Felix Stass die alleinige Gesangsposition und variiert gekonnt zwischen Growls und Klargesang.

Die weiteren Songs bleiben zwar vom Hitfaktor etwas gegenüber den Starttracks zurück, sind aber erstaunlich gut. Hätte ich am Anfang nicht gedacht, dass mir das Album nach hinten raus dann doch so gut gefällt. Wer mit der Musik der Band was anfangen kann, für den ist „Destination“ genau richtig. Die Musik klingt modern, die Band kommt geerdeter rüber und hat beim Schreiben der Songs aber einfach auch ihr Ding gemacht. Man erkennt sofort, welche Band man hier vor sich hat, darf sich als Hörer aber auch ein bisschen überraschen lassen und freuen, was CREMATORY für ihre Fans so neues anbieten. Ein Album für alle, die noch was für Gothic Metal übrig haben. (eller)

2025 jährt sich die Gründung von IN EXTREMO zum 30. Mal: Um diesen Anlass mit ihren Fans gebührend feiern zu können, veranstalten die sechs Musiker vom 04. bis zum 06.09.25 ein großes, dreitägiges Jubiläumsfestival auf der Freiluftbühne Loreley. While the skies of the world are darkening, something powerful and resilient is pushing from below through the pungent springtime topsoil close to the City of Göteborg in Sweden. This sprout that is charged with organic and electric energy bears the name “The Coloured Breeze Is a New Dimension”. TWICE A MAN planted its seed with the song ‘Dahlia’, a ‘new’ track that was written to complement the compilation album “Songs of Future Memories”. 
 
For three years, the Swedish dark electronic trio fertilised and nurtured the germ bud until it had taken firm root in their musical heritage and began to send offshoots to find new sonic spots beyond any previously built garden walls. “The Coloured Breeze Is a New Dimension” is an organic entity that creates something new by re-combining its musical DNA in various ways. As a result, its tracks blossom in many hues of electronic colours.
 

 
TWICE A MAN have always been pioneers. They spearheaded electronic music in their native Sweden. Long before it was fashionable, the Swedes positioned themselves as environmentalists. This theme is still running through their lyrics but is also reflected in their music that still amalgamates futuristic electronics and organic elements. In their holistic approach of creating a sonic cosmos of their own, the band resembles THE LEGENDARY PINK DOTS. Musically, theirs is a different story that has been lovingly described as “Ultravox on weed – also melancholic but without the saccharine pathos” or “like a sad Gary Numan, but with a warm, organic touch”. There are also gentle echoes of TANGERINE DREAM, KLAUS SCHULZE, and THE HUMAN LEAGUE among many other possible references.    
 
When singer, guitarist, and keyboarder Dan Söderqvist teamed up with synth player Karl Gasleben in 1977, the duo formed COSMIC OVERDOSE as the first electronic band in Scandinavia, which grew into TWICE A MAN. During their remarkable career, the Swedes released a multitude of full-length albums that include special projects and two compilations. They also played countless shows and went on to create a soundtrack for 7 full-evening theatre performances at The Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm, music for movies, exhibitions, dance performances, and computer games.
 
TWICE A MAN‘s interest in nature, environmental issues, and natural protection was always present and manifested for example in music for an exhibition about whales at the Cultural House of Stockholm in 1984. The multimedia performance “Driftwood” (1988) described the nature of their childhood at the west coast of Sweden and in a similar vein they also released the ambient forest album “Cocoon” (2019). Samples from the sound of the natural world and field recordings have been incorporated into the music of TWICE A MAN already in the early 80s.
 
The natural world still remains as a strong presence in the lyrics and sound of “The Coloured Breeze Is a New Dimension”. It is the musical equivalent of TWICE A MAN seeking and offering comfort by allowing their minds to wander into nature, art, and towards friends and books to get away for some time from all modern evils.

Die BLIND PASSENGERS waren gegen deren Ende die erste Synth Pop-Band in der DDR, welche natürlich vom großen Vorbild DEPECHE MODE beeinflusst war. Ihr Debüt-Album musste allerdings noch bis 1993 warten, welches sie nach langen hin und her in Eigenregie in einer Auflage von 1000 Stück auf CD veröffentlicht haben. Dieses verkaufte sich auf Grund ihres regionalen Radio-Airplay und treuer Fanbase sehr schnell, was letztendlich das renommierte Strange Ways-Label auf den Plan rief, die das Album dann übernommen und vertrieben haben. Im Gegensatz zu den vergleichbaren westdeutschen DE/VISION, mit denen man sich sogar das Label teilte, waren BLIND PASSENGERS zu dieser Zeit schon deutlich moderner und mutiger unterwegs. Wo DE/VISION lange (und leider inzwischen auch heute wieder) biederen, aber erfolgreichen Synth Pop nach dem übergroßen Vorbild aus Basildon ablieferten, experimentierten die BLIND PASSENGERS schon auf ihrem Debüt mit Dance-Beats und rockiger Attitüde. Mit dem folgenden Album „Destroyka“ wurde es dann noch mehr Crossover bzw. richtig fett und rockig, um später über Trip Hop und Break Beats letztendlich zum Industrial Metal-Act zu mutieren. Doch zurück zu „The Glamour Of Darkness“, welches jetzt Dank Emmo.biz Records erstmals im Vinyl-Format erscheint und somit hoffentlich noch einmal die verdiente Beachtung bekommt, obwohl es die Band seit 2005 leider nicht mehr gibt. Die Titelliste wurde für die LP-Veröffentlichung etwas umgestellt, musste aber zum Glück nicht gekürzt werden, sondern wurde sogar noch um „Born To Die“ erweitert. Dieser Hit der PASSENGERS war seiner Zeit nur auf MCD erhältlich und später in einer anderen Version auf „Destroyka“ zu finden. Zusammen mit den Hymnen „Walking To Heaven“, „Small-Town Night“ und 10 weiteren Songs erstrahlt dieser jetzt dezent aufpoliert im neuen alten Glanz und die Neuauflage von „The Glamour Of Darkness“ bringt somit die BLIND PASSENGERS mächtig wieder ins Bewusstsein der Szene zurück! Das Album bietet außergewöhnlich feurig-glänzenden Synth Pop mit groovigen Rhythmen und hymnenhaften Hooklines, wie einem für das Genre ungewöhnlichen Gesang, der mich damals sofort an die ostdeutsche Gitarren Dark Pop-Band DIE VISION erinnert hatte. Das Cover-Artwork illustriert den Sound des Albums absolut passend und kommt nun im LP-Format endlich auch mal richtig zur Geltung. 222 Exemplare im durchsichtig rotem Vinyl mit schwarzen Schlieren gibt es davon und zusätzlich 77 Deluxe-Boxen mit Poster, Metal-Pin + T-Shirt. Die Platte wurde vorbildlich gepresst, klingt und schaut sehr gut aus, wie macht beim hören richtig Freude! Wenn alles klappt, werden bald vielleicht weitere Veröffentlichungen der BLIND PASSENGERS auf Vinyl folgen und eventuell haucht ja dieser Lauf auch der Band neues Leben ein – ich fände es auf jeden Fall super! Bis dahin rotiert „The Glamour Of Darkness“ auf dem Teller und ich habe mich parallel mal wieder durch die CD-Diskografie der Jungs gehört und feststellen müssen, wie richtig klasse die doch zu ihrer Zeit waren!
